Otome visual novel follow-up 9 R.I.P. Sequel from Idea Factory International, Design Factory, and Otomate brings us a series of new stories to experience on Nintendo Switch. This one follows directly after the endings of 9 R.I.P., when protagonist Misa Isshiki finds herself at a crossroads, balancing romantic life and the consequences of her choices during her second year of high school. You know, because she’s dead. Or… not really? Who knows! It all depends on the route you’re taking, since – as expected – this visual novel offers branching paths that change considerably depending on whether you’re on a Heavenly route or a Godly route.

If you need to learn more about the prequel, then you can go ahead and check out our R.I.P. 9 review on Nintendo Switch from a couple of years ago. This will allow you to get a good idea of the essence of the main protagonist, Misa Isshiki, as well as the other characters that you’ll be interacting with during this new journey that will feel familiar while expanding the R.I.P. 9 universe.

There are 9 full routes for you to experience, and love is lurking around every corner, offering a good variety of romance with, say, a spirit, a demon, or a man, so that returning fans and new fans alike can take this one for a spin and experience bite-sized or chunkier segments with some interesting outcomes.

There will be Heavenly routes that will follow from the Heavenly endings in 9 R.I.P., as well as Godly routes, which, as expected, take place after the Godly endings of the prequel. While Heavenly routes in 9 R.I.P. Sequel will feature new obstacles to overcome and new elements to your relationships with the other characters, Godly routes are going to be a bit more on the lovey-dovey,

As expected of a visual novel, the choices you make along the way will have consequences, affecting the type of ending that you can get for each route. These will be available during the Heavenly routes. You’ll be making Affection choices and Cognitive choices. Affection choices reflect how you want to show your affection to someone else. Cognitive choices will determine your actions and reflect your thoughts.

As a bonus, there’s an extra mode you can jump into in which you’ll get to experience the rather mysterious Nine Wonders that are the source of many rumors in Narimigahama. It’s up to you – and your power to witness the supernatural – to help your best friend, Sayaka, finally discover what truth may lie behind all of these rumors. You’ll be unlocking these locations by experiencing the different stories in the Heavenly routes.

On top of these, there’s also a bonus mode in which you’ll be trying to learn more about the rumored Nine Wonders, exploring each location after you’ve unlocked it by making your way through the different Heavenly routes that the main game has to offer. And once you get all potential endings, you’ll be able to visit the Voices section and listen to special messages and read some short stories for the characters.

It’s a game that brings us both a sequel as well as some content that would not feel out of place in a visual novel fan disc release. If that term does not ring a bell, as its name suggests, a fan disc is a game that is released as sort of a thank you to fans for their support of a visual novel, presenting new storylines and epilogues that expand on the endings from the main release. 9 R.I.P. Sequel launches next week on Nintendo Switch on October 27 with a $39.99 price tag.
