[PlayStation 4] Thy Sword Review | PS4Blog.net
Thy Sword from GamePhase and Ratalaika Games is a 2D roguelike hack and slash on PS4 and PS Vita. Learn more in our Thy Sword review!
In Thy Sword from Ratalaika Games and GamePhase, you will take on the role of a Barbarian or a Valkyrie on a quest to defeat the Dark Overlord, in order to end its reign of tyranny. As you progress through the game, you’ll be able to unlock more heroes, but as a starting point, the Barbarian and the Valkyrie offer a perfect jumping point for players of all skill levels.
There are three difficulty settings to choose from, so if you’re new to 2D action platformers, you can take on Thy Sword on the Apprentice difficulty setting, so that you can have infinite credits that can help you complete your task. If you want to bump things up a bit, there is Adventurer for which you’ll only have three credits to continue from the current area after being defeated, but at least you get to keep your items. And if you’re ready for a bigger challenge, you can select the Hero difficulty, for which you will only have the one credit to survive until the end!
Since this is a 2D roguelike action platformer in which each stage takes place over a single screen, you will be controlling your hero with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the X button, and attacking with the R1 button. The Square button is for dishing out a heavy special spinning attack that is slower but can kill weaker enemies in a single hit. You can block some attacks with the L button to protect. You will also have access to a bow to attack enemies from a safer distance – or to target, say, flying opponents – which you can aim and shoot with the Circle button and the left analog stick or the D-Pad. There is also a magic attack that will damage all enemies on the screen, and you can use it by pressing and holding the attack button for a bit. After using it, you will need to find a magic crystal to recharge it.
The Barbarian needs to acquire a bow to attack enemies from a distance, but he does start with a heavy and deadly broadsword, as well as being able to take more damage from enemies due to his build. On the other hand, the Valkyrie does not have the overall strength of the Barbarian, but she does start the adventure with a short sword and a longbow, making her an easier option for players new to 2D roguelike action platformers.
Some of the enemies you defeat, or the barrels you destroy with your might, will leave behind some coins or gems for you to collect. These can be used with the Cleric and the Merchant you find during your journey to purchasing items that can increase your odds of survival. The Cleric will sell you things such as a Potion of Healing so that you can regain two health points, or an Amulet of Life, which can boost your overall hit points by one. The merchant can offer you arrows for your bow, as well as more powerful bows and swords, or a quiver that holds more arrows. Be sure to save up for the more expensive items from each one, since they will certainly make a difference!
As for the trophies, this is a Ratalaika Games release, you can expect to take on the task of adding one more Platinum to your collection! And since Thy Sword is a cross-buy PS4 and PlayStation Vita release, that means two potential Platinum trophies with your purchase! A handful of the trophies are missable – one, in particular, can only be achieved in the last stage of one area – but if you know what you’re being asked to do, you can get all trophies in a single run and finish the game in a couple of hours at most depending on your experience with 2D action platformers.
Thy Sword is a fun, bite-sized 2D action platformer with a fantasy theme that has a nice pick-up and play quality to it. The challenge can be tailored to your skill level thanks to the three difficulty settings, and unlocking new characters will keep you coming back for more. Thy Sword is out as a Cross-Buy game on PS4 and PS Vita for $9.99.
