[PS4Blog.net Interview] Chibig On Summer In Mara

by EdEN, Owner

Chibig has taken to Kickstarter for the funding for developing their new project, so I got in touch with them to talk about Summer in Mara. Come check it out!

PS4Blog: Good morning! Thank you for joining us today. Could you please help us get started by telling our readers a bit about yourself and your work?

We are Chibig, an indie game studio located in sunny Valencia, Spain. We have been making video games since 2015. Our two first releases, Tiny Planet and Ankora, were released back in 2016 for iOS and Android, and now they have been played by over 3 million people!

After that, we spent a year making Deiland, our first game for PC and PS4. It launched in 2018, and it has been a great success for us. We’re now making Summer in Mara, a new summer adventure about taking care of your own island and explore the ocean with your boat.

We are really happy about our community and the people who constantly tell us how much they love Deiland and our universe. For us, that’s the best part of making games.

PS4B: You’re currently working on a Kickstarter campaign for Summer in Mara. What can you tell us about this very charming project?

In this game, you’re Koa, a little adventurer who has to take care of her own island, farming and crafting new tools. She also wants to explore the ocean with her boat, so you will sail away to new islands and meet new people. You can trade with them or just chat for a bit because your main goal is making Mara a better place.

We want this game to be a relaxing, charming experience without any pressure, a game that you can play at your own pace. It’s an evolution from Deiland, a bigger game and even more focused on storytelling.

PS4B: We had a lot of fun reviewing Deiland, so we were wondering how that game and Summer in Mara are similar and yet differently unique.

Thank you so much for your kind words! The main difference between the two games is, of course, the scope. In Deiland, you have your planet to take care of. But in Summer in Mara, you have an ocean with islands to visit. You can swim and dive into this ocean. The main island is certainly bigger than Deiland’s planet.

But we’re keeping our main gameplay mechanics. Farming and crafting are still an important part of the game, but as an iteration from the activities in Deiland. Your crops now grow with a day and night cycle, rather than with time.

PS4B: The way the campaign is doing, are you considering any potential stretch goals for the project?

Yes! We want to introduce new mechanics, like surfing! Or customization for Koa, both for her clothes and her backpack. We also want to make more amazing 2D cinematics with our friends from Ciervo Alto. They made the one that you saw in the trailer, and it’s mindblowingly good!

PS4B: And that’s all the time we have for today. Is there something else you’d like to add before we go?

Thank you so much for the interview! You can check our Kickstarter and share it on your Twitter and Instagram – that will help us a lot!
