[PS4Blog.net] czazuaga On Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher

by EdEN, Owner

I had a chance to work on a Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher review, so I got in touch with indie czazuaga to talk about the game and its development. Come check it out!

PS4Blog: Hi! Good to have you back with us. How’s everything going on your end?

Hi! Thanks, it’s great to be back. Everything is going well. The last few months have been pretty intense getting Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher ready for its console release, so it feels really good to finally have it out there and see people playing it.

PS4B: On that note, Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher is out now on consoles. How would you describe the game to someone who’s new to it?

I’d describe it as a short, atmospheric horror experience heavily inspired by classic slasher movies. You play as a writer spending some time alone in a remote cabin near the small town of Yellowcreek, and what starts as a quiet night gradually becomes more and more unsettling.
The game is much more focused on atmosphere, tension, and storytelling than on combat. A big part of the horror comes from the feeling that something is wrong, that someone might be watching you, and from not knowing exactly when things are going to escalate. I wanted it to feel a little bit like being inside an old late-’70s or ’80s horror film.

PS4B: It’s definitely a very different experience than your previous game, Lords of Exile. What drew you toward working on a horror game?

That difference was actually one of the reasons I wanted to make it. After spending so much time working on Lords of Exile, I wanted to do something completely different creatively.

I’ve always been a big fan of horror, especially slashers and movies where atmosphere and suspense are more important than constantly showing the threat. Making The Cabin Watcher gave me the chance to experiment with things I hadn’t really explored before: cinematography, slower pacing, environmental storytelling, sound design, and building tension around very small details.

It was also refreshing to work on a game where the goal wasn’t necessarily to create lots of mechanics, but to create a very specific mood and experience from beginning to end.

PS4B: Any plans for working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Yellowcreek Stories: The Cabin Watcher?

It’s definitely something I’d be interested in. Right now I don’t have anything concrete to announce regarding a Switch 2 version, but I’d love to have The Cabin Watcher available on as many platforms as possible.

So I wouldn’t rule it out at all, but for the moment there’s nothing official I can share.

PS4B: And now it’s time for us to go. Would you like to add something else?

Just a big thank you to everyone who has supported the game, whether you played it, shared it, streamed it or simply followed its development.

The Cabin Watcher is also my first step into the world of Yellowcreek Stories. I really like the idea of Yellowcreek as a place where different strange and disturbing stories can happen, so hopefully this won’t be the last time we visit it.

And of course, thanks a lot for having me back!
