OVER REQUIEMZ from Akysis Games, Kogado Studio, Idea Factory, and Otomate brings us a dark fantasy otome visual novel set in the wonderful Kingdom of Oz. The land is currently under the rule of four witches and a King. Your name is Yuhiri, and you’re a high school student who has arrived here after being caught by a huge tornado. To make things worse, you’re sentenced to death the moment you set foot in Oz, and are tasked with investigating a set of mysterious ruins alongside four murderers on death row, as well as the supervisor of these condemned individuals. You’ll need to race against the clock and find a way to avoid your death sentence and escape so that you can hopefully find a way back home.
The ruins are packed with monsters, and exploring them is pretty much the same as having said death sentence chopping off your head. The monsters pose a big danger for the people of Oz, which is why they need to send extermination squads to take care of the monsters. Those who manage to go and complete this job and get back are shown amnesty, and that’s basically your one and only shot.
How is it that you got yourself into this predicament in the first place? It seems that in the Kingdom of Oz, people who have black eyes and black hair are called Bedeviled, and they’re feared as heralds of calamity. When someone other than Dorothy saw you inside the castle, that made everyone go into panic mode… and that’s how you were sentenced to death! Once Glinda Felis, the Witch of the South, completes the departure ceremony, you’ll be sent on the ruin expedition.
Not familiar with visual novels? The visual novel genre includes releases that, as the name suggests, usually present a novel’s worth of story, presented in a visual format with character portraits, many locations to visit, special images that expand on special moments, and a ton of dialogue. They sometimes feature voice acting – an expensive resource to have when implemented properly – and that’s the case for OVER REQUIEMZ, with voice acting available in Japanese. This one is an otome visual novel, and what that means is that there’s a chance for you to find love along the way. There are different romantic suitors, and your interactions with them will have an effect on who you grow closer to.
Choices have consequences, and some of your actions will dictate what routes and paths you’ll go down. There are normal choices to make, which will only change how each conversation goes, and then there are branching choices that will decide which route you’ll go down. Normal choices are easy to spot since they occur in regular conversations. Branching choices are a bit more grandiose, since they will glow as you highlight them, and they will, well, send you down a branch.
Once you’ve completed the prologue, you’ll be able to pick any of the story routes and progress accordingly. Who are the characters that you’ll be able to potentially get close to? They are Kaize Ozma, Claude Grain, Molly Woodland, Noil Bestia, and Dorothy. Yes, that Dorothy. But, you know, this one is the Witch of the North, and he’s the one in charge of supervising the extermination crew. What are the crimes of those who have also been condemned to death?
Kaize Ozma’s crime is regicide. That’s killing the King of Oz. And if the name didn’t clue you in, Kaize just happens to be the King’s son. You know, Prince Kaize Ozma. Claude Grain has been charged with murdering all residents of the Eastern Granary Village three years ago. Molly Woodland assaulted and murdered traveling merchants three months ago. As for Noil Bestia, he was charged with slaughtering 11 members of his Platoon at the southern military base.

The ruins seem to be connected to these ruins are somehow connected to the otherworld, which is how the people of Oz talk in their fairytales about the events that led the ruins to pop up throughout the land. These are definitely tied to Japan since the first ruin that you see in the middle of the Emerald City is none other than the Tokyo Tower!
As expected of a retail visual novel, this one features four different special sections for you to check out: Gallery, Sound, Movie, and Reward. The Gallery section will allow you to review the CGs for each of the characters. The Sound section allows you to listen to all of the songs in the game. The Movie section is for rewatching the intro movie as well as the ones for the different endings that you can get. As for the Reward section, well, that’s one that I won’t be spoiling here, so you’ll have to play this one to find out what you’ll get! OVER REQUIEMZ launches on August 20 on Nintendo Switch with a $49.99 price tag.
