Moros Protocol from Super Rare Games and Pixel Reign is a sci-fi roguelike FPS with a painted pixel look. It takes place aboard The Orpheus, a warship that has now been overrun by deadly horrors. With no recollection of how things got to be this way in the first place, you must now fight by exploring room by room as you try to survive while fighting against the Darkphage. The Orpheus shifts around you, changing its layout with every run that you take on. You’ll be stepping into the role of Alex, waking up from cryosleep to find that the other crew members have been unalived. You’ll be joined on this journey by sentry model ODY-6, who will be aiding you along the way.

Tracey previously had a chance to work on a review for Robbie Swifthand and the Orb of Mysteries on Nintendo Switch from this indie developer, a challenging 2D platformer in which you explored a temple full of dangers, and she had fun with it, so I was definitely up for checking out this new release from the studio.

There’s a tutorial segment that you should definitely consider so that you can learn all of the basics. Since this one is played from a first-person perspective, you’ll be taking control of your character with the left analog, as you use the right analog stick to look around you and aim as needed. Sprint by pressing in on the left analog stick, or by pressing the ZL button.

Jump by pressing the B button. If you sprint before jumping, you’ll be able to perform a longer jump. Attack enemies by pressing the ZR button. If you press and hold down the ZR button, you’ll be able to perform a heavy attack. Try to dodge incoming attacks by pressing the A button and any direction. Do know that jumping or attacking will consume a bit of your stamina. Run out of stamina, and you’ll certainly be in trouble! Activate your flashlight by pressing left on the D-Pad.

Collect weapons by pressing the X button. You can find weapons that use physical ammo, as well as weapons that use energy ammo. Reload your weapon by pressing the Y button. You can use the environment to your advantage. Found an explosive barrel? Kick it by pressing in on the right analog stick and launch it toward your enemies. As you fill up HP shots, you’ll be able to recover a bit of your lost health by using an HP shot by pressing right on the D-Pad. Found a locked door? Then you’ll need to collect the corresponding keycard.

When you enter a room with Darkphage activity, that room will be placed in lockdown, and you’ll have to take care of every single alien entity in the room before the lockdown is removed and you’re allowed to continue exploring. I suggest that you focus on defeating enemies instead of, say, destroying credit sacks, or else you could end up being overwhelmed by the enemies of all shapes and sizes.

During a run, you’ll be able to collect augments to improve your character. Such an example is the Circulation Booster, which will increase HP shot healing by 3. Check your inventory by pressing the + button. From there, you’ll be able to equip an augment in one of your available armor slots so that you can take advantage of its benefits.

As you progress through each run, you’ll be able to pick the next part of The Orpheus that you’ll explore. This will be done by selecting one of the available nodes on the map. These include, for instance, a Credits node in which mode credit sacks will spawn, the Vendor node, where you’ll be able to visit a merchant to purchase useful items, the Augments node, in which you can locate a pair of extra augment caches, a Power Outage node, which will have you exploring during a sector-wide blackout with slightly increased rewards, a Danger node, in which there will be increased Darkphage activity, all leading up to the Boss fight that will test your skills.

You can visit the AcanthaX Bio Boost Upgrade System to unlock upgrades by spending the Biomats you gather. Some of your options will include adding a boost to your base HP, increasing base stamina, adding an extra HP slot, increasing energy ammo capacity, increasing physical ammo capacity, reducing jump stamina cost, starting with a tier 1 ranged weapon, increasing the stamina regeneration rate, increasing running by 5%, starting with 20 bonus credits, boosting ranged damage, increasing reload speed, or increasing the pickup magnet radius, to name some examples.

As you can tell from the trailer and screens in this Moros Protocol review, the game goes for a low-poly presentation with chunky pixel textures that will remind you of first-person shooters from the 1990s and early 2000s. It’s a game that pays homage to the classics while offering a revamped experience with dynamic lighting and sound effects that will keep you on high alert at all times. Moros Protocol launches tomorrow on Nintendo Switch 2 with a $24.99 price tag.
