Lou’s Lagoon from Megabit Publishing and Tiny Roar is a colorful and cozy adventure through the tropical Limbo Archipelago. After a nasty storm hits the region, you’ll need to fly around on your seaplane as you use your trusty Swirler multitool to retrieve enough materials to aid the locals in their rebuilding efforts. To make things worse, Uncle Lou has gone MIA, so you’ll also need to work on finding out what happened to him. He’s YOUR Uncle Lou, which is why you immediately answered his distress signal.
Tiny Roar took Lou’s Lagoon to Kickstarter last year, seeking €10,000 in funding to be able to work on developing additional content for the game. Once the crowdfunding campaign was over, and thanks to the support of more than 740 backers, the team managed to secure €27,000+ in funding. This allowed them to get to work on the Pirate Bay expansion, which will be made available at a later date as DLC for the game.
The first step in this experience will be to customize your character’s appearance. You will pick a face shape and skin color, and then move on to selecting a hair type and color. After that, pick your character’s eyebrows, eyes and their color, nose type, whether it will have a beard or not, and face marks and color, with the last step being choosing a character’s voice.
Once you’ve taken care of that, you’ll be taking control of your character by using the left analog stick while you use the right analog stick for moving the camera around as needed. You can run by pressing and holding down the R button. Jump – and double jump – by pressing the B button. Press the Y button to interact with objects, points of interest, or other characters.
As mentioned before, you’ll be using the Swirler to collect any resources you can find along the way. These include materials dropped by the wildlife of the Limbo Archipelago, as well as any scrap you can find here and there. All of these resources will then be used to craft goods, repair the damaged buildings, and start to get closer and closer to finding Uncle Lou. You’ll also need to make this your home, so be sure to work on building your island base, decorating it to better reflect your personality. Just press the ZR button to have the Swirler 1.0 suck in everything near you.
Once you have enough materials to repair something, approach the area and press the ZL button to have the Swirler spit them out. You’ll also be collecting larger items to complete different quests, and the same general principles will apply for these. Just suck them into your inventory and then launch them into place!
If you are to progress on this adventure, you’ll need to work on collecting as many Shellings as possible. Shellings will act as the currency accepted throughout the Limbo Archipelago. You’ll receive some from Hefti so that you can go and purchase a microchip from Jackie to repair the seaplane. You can also use Shellings to buy additional resources. And yes, you will be able to sell the items in your bag as well!
This is why it’s important that you make the most of the refinery. You can use the refinery to process raw materials into refined materials. Add some scrap into the refiner to get some refined metal. Introduce a bunch of driftwood to get refined wood. And if you use refined metal and refined wood in the refiner, you can get some refined stone!
Once you take care of fixing the seaplane, you’ll get to fly it around the Limbo Archipelago to explore new areas. You’ll be doing this by using the left analog stick to steer as you gain height or dip down as needed. You can also use a boost by pressing the B button – as long as you have enough charges left! – as well as hit the brakes to lower your overall speed by pressing the A button.
You can also upgrade your tools to improve their efficiency. This is important for the Swirler 1.0, since it won’t be powerful enough to suck in every single resource that you run into. Just be sure to collect enough magnetic pulse bolts to work on its upgrade so that you can suck in additional resources! You can also get the Builder 1.0 to, well, build stuff, the Fishing Rod 1.0 to do some chill fishing, the Glider 1.0 to glide over longer gaps, or the Scooper 1.0 to look underground and spot hidden treasure, and then also work on upgrading them.

The game is fun to play on Nintendo’s current-gen console, but it’s a release that could certainly benefit from an extra patch or two to improve its performance and to take care of some bugs. Every now and then, the camera’s focus is screwed up when switching between characters during a cutscene. There are also some collision issues with objects that can leave you stuck, which is why the game has an option in the menu that simply says “I AM STUCK!”
Lou’s Lagoon is out on Nintendo Switch 2 with a $24.99 price tag. There’s also a Nintendo Switch version available for the same price. If you get that version, then you can go ahead and get the Lou’s Lagoon – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at no extra cost, and this will, well, upgrade your Nintendo Switch copy of Lou’s Lagoon to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
