Aggelos 2 from PQube, PixelHeart, and WONDERBOY BOBI is a sequel that bumps up the action and challenge as you go on a mission to the Kingdom of Lumen. You are an Aggelos, part of the highest order of angels, and have been picked by Balro for this mission. Lumen is currently under siege by the forces of the Army of Darkness, and you’re the only one who can make a difference and stop them before it’s too late. Why is that? Because you’re an Aggelos that has one foot in one world and one in the other, and you will need to make the most of your new shadowy form if you are to survive the chaos.
I previously had a chance to work on an Aggelos review on Nintendo Switch back in 2019. I had fun with that 2D action RPG experience that paid homage to old-school games from way back when, so I was definitely up for checking out what Aggelos 2 was bringing to the table on Nintendo’s console.
Yes, you’ll unlock new abilities along the way that will change how you approach exploration and combat. This is, after all, a Metroidvania! You’ll start losing all of your equipment after being struck by a large dark energy bolt. After this, you’ll be taking control of your character by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, as you jump by pressing the B button.
The first piece of equipment that you’ll find is your bracelet, which you can then use to shoot at enemies by pressing the Y button. After that, you’ll get an orb container, which you will then be able to use to collect the many orbs that your enemies will drop as you destroy them. Orbs will act as the in-game currency. Once you grab your sword, you’ll be able to use it to attack enemies by pressing the X button.
After you manage to regain your wings, you’ll be able to jump and then press the B button again to fly. While flying, press the ZR button to lock your direction. Just be sure to pay attention to the flying gauge so that you don’t run out of energy! Find the Geyser Spell, and you’ll be able to use some of your magic energy to launch it upward by pressing up on the left analog stick or the D-Pad and the Y button.
Collect the grappling hook and launch it by pressing the L button so that you can cling to surfaces and reach new areas. Purchase a magic vial for 100 orbs so that you can press the A button to heal some of your wounds and recover 3 of your lost hearts. Press the – button to open up your map, so that you can have a better idea of where you’ve already been to, and where you should be heading next.
As mentioned before, you’ll eventually need to switch between your angel and demon forms, which is done by pressing the ZL button. Your demon form is more agile and powerful, and it’s the one you’ll need to use to enter the dark portals to the other world. While your angel form can absorb light energy with its sword attack, the demon form can absorb dark energy with its sword attack. Magic vials that restore your health in angel form will increase your speed while in demon form.
Be sure to use all of your abilities and tools to search high and low, so that you can find all of the useful upgrades that can aid you on this adventure. Having more magic vials means you can restore your lost hearts. Having more heart containers means you can take more damage before being defeated. Upgrade your armor by spending a ton of orbs, so that you receive less damage from each hit.

As you can tell from the trailers and screens in this Aggelos 2 review, the game features some fetching pixel art with detailed sprites that pop as you explore each area. The variety in enemy and boss designs also helps to keep the whole thing feeling fresh. It’s a game that has been inspired by the Wonder Boy/Monster World series, hence the indie dev’s pen name.
You’ll be taking on hordes of enemies who are more than ready to tear you to pieces, both in the regular world and the parallel world. There are also 13 huge bosses to defeat across both realms, testing your skills in full. Aggelos 2 launches tomorrow on Nintendo Switch with a $19.99 price tag.
