Axel Quest from Ratalaika Games and PowerSlash Studios brings us an old-school-infused 2D action RPG with a dash of Metroidvania on PlayStation 5. You will need to explore a pixel world full of monsters of all shapes and sizes, as you aim to do whatever it takes to save the King and the Princess, who have been taken by deadly creatures. You will have to collect better gear, add the power of magical gems, and defeat all of the bosses who are foolish enough to stand in your path.

You’ll be taking control of your character by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping by pressing the X button. You can use the Circle button to pick up and throw objects. You can also use this button to open up treasure chests. Once you collect an iron sword, you’ll get to swing it around and attack enemies by pressing the Square button. You can also then jump and press the Circle button to perform a downward sword attack that will allow you to bounce off enemies while also dealing damage. You can also do this by pressing the down direction on the left analog stick or the D-Pad after your jump.
You start with 5 total hit points (HP) and stat values of 2 for your attack and 1 for your defense. You can obtain better gear by collecting, purchasing it from vendors, or by upgrading it. Your starting leather armor helps to protect you, but only barely. Oh, and falling down a bottomless pit will instantly drain all of your HP, sending you back to the last shrine that you activated.

Got yourself a Ring of Vitality? Great! This will increase your max HP so that you can take a bit more damage before you’re defeated. Buy a Ranger Bow so that you can attack enemies from a safer distance by pressing the Triangle button. Get a Life Heart to increase your max HP a little more. Or grab a powerful Silver Sword to considerably boost your attack power.
There are also powerful gems that will grant you special abilities, such as the Stone Gem, which allows you to break stones with your sword. Get the Aqua Stone, and you’ll finally be able to swim around underwater by pressing the X button in quick succession. Grab the Thunder Gem, and you’ll get to warp between the shrines that you’ve discovered so far.

Trophy-wise, this one is from Ratalaika Games, and that means we can expect two things: a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy, and that Axel Quest is a Cross-Buy release, so you’ll be able to download the PS4 and PS4 versions to your PS5 console, and each one will have its own trophy list for you to take on. Each list will be split into 20 Silver trophies and 5 Gold trophies. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? Some of the objectives to complete include getting your first weapon, obtaining the Ranger Bow, buying your first upgrade, obtaining your first relic, getting your hands on each of the different magical gems that will aid you, beating the bosses that the game will throw at you, using the shrine to warp to Sunstone Village, and finding all treasures, to name some examples.
