Moss: The Forgotten Relic from Polyarc brings us the definitive way of enjoying Quill’s journey on Nintendo Switch 2. You’ll be working on guiding our mouse hero as she explores each area while being guided and protected by you. You are the Reader and will be forming a deep bond of trust with Quill, who will follow your advice every step of the way. You will need to shape the world itself as you interact with a variety of objects and contraptions to be able to create safe paths for Quill to take.

Moss: The Forgotten Relic Review - 1

It all started in the Cynder night, a moment in which the land of Moss was changed forever. A winged creature enveloped in darkness took the King with its claws, as other creatures stormed the castle in search of the relics of legend that allegedly provided the King with his mighty powers. The woodland creatures had to flee in terror to try and save what little they had left. It’s now up to you to help Quill to hopefully revert this.

As expected, the core experience will be the same when comparing the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the game. The difference lies in how the Nintendo Switch 2 version offers a higher max resolution, a fixed 60 frames per second framerate, improved anti-aliasing, as well as enhanced lighting, visual effects, and depth of field. This is why the game is 8.8 GB on Nintendo Switch and 10.7 GB on Nintendo Switch 2.

The_nmac previously had a chance to work on a review for Moss and the Twilight Garden DLC on PlayStation VR back in 2019. He then followed this with a review for Moss: Book II on PlayStation VR in 2022, and he definitely had a lot of fun with both experiences, so I was more than ready to take this reimagined take for a spin on Nintendo Switch 2.

Once you pick from starting Moss Book I or Moss Book II, your new adventure will begin. If you’re new to the series, then you should definitely start with Moss Book I. You’ll soon realize that you’ll definitely need to interact with the world around you, since the game will kindly ask that you press and hold down the ZR button and use the right analog stick to open the book before you. You’ll then need to do the same to turn the next page. See? You’re the Reader!

When directly controlling Quill, you’ll be doing so by using the left analog stick, jumping by pressing the B button, and attacking by pressing the Y button. You can perform a dive attack by jumping and then attacking. Pressing and holding down the Y button will perform a charge attack. For Moss Book II, you’ll gain new weapons, and you’ll be able to swap between them by pressing left, up, or right on the D-Pad once you have access to them.

The A button can be pressed for a quick dodge that can hopefully keep Quill safe from harm. Equipment items will be added to your inventory, which you can review by pressing down on the D-Pad. Remember how you used the right analog stick to move a cursor around the screen and then grab stuff by pressing the ZR button? This is how you’ll be helping Quill carry on with her quest, adding some platforms here and there, opening doors, triggering switches, as well as aiding her to survive by healing her wounds.

If you want to 100% this one, you’ll need to pay attention as you move through each area so that you can find all collectibles. These include Forgotten Fragments, as well as Relic Dust. Forgotten Fragments are special scrolls that you can find here and there. As for Relic Dust, it’s glowing particles of energy that are more plentiful. Just be sure to break all boxes, pots, and other stuff that you run into before leaving an area, and you’ll be good to go. As a heads-up, Moss Book I has 375 particles of Relic Dust and 31 Forgotten Fragments. Meanwhile, Moss Book II has 350 particles of Relic Dust and 48 Forgotten Fragments.

Given its PlayStation VR origins, you’ll be exploring small area after small area while taking advantage of the new dynamic camera that follows Quill instead of focusing on what your view would be like if you were wearing a PlayStation VR headset. This new take makes for a more focused experience since the jittery camera movement you would get from the PlayStation VR version is gone, which certainly makes for a more familiar and streamlined gameplay loop.

Moss: The Forgotten Relic launches on July 16 with a $19.99 price tag, making it an easy one to recommend on Nintendo Switch 2. There’s also a Nintendo Switch version of the game available for the same price as a separate purchase. The good news is that if you buy the Nintendo Switch version of the game, you’ll then be able to grab the Nintendo Switch 2 version at no extra cost.
