JAWS: Retro Edition from Limited Run Games brings us an enhanced take on the beloved 2D classic experience, now on PlayStation 5. It’s time to once again do whatever it takes to stop the Great White monster from continuing its killing spree in a game that pays homage to the JAWS franchise by taking elements from the different movies, including using the movie poster for the fourth game – JAWS: The Revenge – as the basis for the game’s cover when it was released back in the day in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System – that would be the beloved NES.

This release features two versions of the game: the Original version that will take you back to 1987 in style, and the Enhanced version that reimagines the game as a new experience that pays homage to all four movies in the franchise with a story mode and some lite RPG elements for you to consider. You can complete quests, as well as use new weapons and abilities to get the job done. There are even new enemies to take on, which definitely changes how you approach things.
The gameplay loop is going to be similar for both versions, since you’ll be navigating an overworld as you end up taking on small locations where you must defeat enemies and collect resources, or even end up going against the mighty white shark with your boat – or submarine, if you can find it – before being forced to dive into the water in which one hit can signal the end of you in a blink.

While both versions are still going to feel challenging by modern standards, there is some good news. You can take advantage of a rewind feature – activated by pressing and holding down the L2 button on the DualSense controller – so that you can instantly fix any mistakes you make along the way, and you can also save your progress anytime so that you can immediately carry onward with great ease.
And now, let’s talk about the game’s trophies! As has been the case for other digital releases from Limited Run Games, this one features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection. The list includes 7 Bronze trophies, 10 Silver trophies, and 7 Gold trophies for you to work on. What will you need to do in order to add one more shiny Platinum trophy to your collection? Trophies are split between the Original version of the game and the Enhanced version of the game, so you’ll need to do at least a couple of runs for this one.

You will get trophies in the Original version for reaching the bonus stage, holding 50 shells at the same time, reaching a high score of 10,000 points, obtaining the receiver, and reaching power level 3. A good chunk of the trophies for the Enhanced version of JAWS will unlock as you complete each of the game’s story chapters, along with trophies for completing your first quest, upgrading a stat in each category, fully upgrading your gear, and acquiring $50,000. You can take the original version of the game for a spin in all of its pixeltastic glory, in an experience that plays and feels just as you remember it, or you can take advantage of the Enhanced version that takes the original game and turns it into an homage of the whole movie franchise while adding some extra story elements, quest to complete, new abilities and weapons, and even new enemies to defeat.
While this one is technically not a collection, per se, it does include two different versions of a game, and that means one can sorta expect some bonus content to be included… and that would be a correct assumption! As was the case for the Rugrats: Retro Rewind Collection, we’re getting a music player for the game’s soundtrack, along with digital versions of the original game box and manual from way back when, and some promotional materials to round up a celebration of the classic JAWS on the NES. JAWS: Retro Edition is out on PlayStation 5 with a $14.99 price tag.
