Gothic 1 Remake from THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive brings us a Rated M for Mature reimagining of the classic action RPG revamped for PlayStation 5. You’ll be placed in the role of a literal nobody, thrown into a dark open world in the Kingdom of Myrtana. You’re not the hero of legend. You’re not the chosen one. You’re a prisoner who must mine for magical ore in the Khorinis mines, and it seems there’s no way to escape since King Rhobar II has ordered that the mages erect a magical barrier around it. Plot twist: the magic goes awry, and everyone inside the barrier is now trapped. This leads the prisoners to rebel, and a new power system in the Colony. It’s now up to you to find a way to survive under this new world order as you claw your way from the bottom of the chain, with nothing more than your fists to get the job done… at least at first. Will you manage to survive in the Valley of the Mines?
Gothic from Piranha Bytes and Xicat Interactive was originally released on Windows PC in 2001, and a lot has changed in the 25-year gap between that and Gothic 1 Remake. The game has been fully rebuilt and upgraded thanks to current-gen technology, offering a more dynamic experience with some quality-of-life improvements. We’re getting expanded questlines, more NPC routines and reactions that help to make the world of Gothic 1 Remake feel more alive, and the combat system is as modern as it can be while remaining faithful to the original version.

And if you want to go back in time, THQ Nordic has the Gothic Classic Khorinis Saga available on Nintendo Switch, which brings both Gothic Classic and the sequel Gothic II Complete Classic to Nintendo’s last-gen hybrid console. Gothic Classic will also release in July on PlayStation, with the sequel following in September. The last entry in the trilogy will then land in November on Sony hardware.
The game offers four difficulty settings for you to choose from: Novice, Gothic, Hard, and Custom. For the first three, they will change the challenge level for combat, collecting resources, and progressing through the game, with Novice being the easiest of the bunch and Hard dialing things up to 11. Combat level will affect enemy health, resistance, and damage. Resources
As expected, the Custom difficulty setting will allow you to mix and match the challenge levels for combat, resources, and progression. You can also enable or disable the Close Combat Flow Helper. If enabled, you won’t be required to use the correct follow-up attack and will be able to continue by using any attack, with the downside being that you won’t be triggering any combos. Oh, and you can also enable Permadeath. If you enable Permadeath, when your character is defeated, that’s the end of it all, and your progress will be completely lost, thus requiring you to restart your journey.

While exploring each area, you’ll be taking control of your character by using the left analog stick, as you use the right analog stick to control the camera as needed. You can push in on the left analog stick to sprint, or press the Square button to try and sneak around. Press the Square button while on water to submerge and dive. Press the Circle button to jump. Your primary interaction will be mapped to the X button, while the secondary interaction will be set to the Triangle button. You can open up your inventory by pressing the Touchpad on the DualSense. Pressing and holding down the Touchpad will open up your map. You can throw an item by choosing it with the L2 button and then launching it with the R2 button.
When in combat, things change around a bit. When you enter a battle, your attacks will be mapped to the Square, Triangle, Circle, and X buttons. Lock onto a target by pressing in on the right analog stick, and use the right analog stick to switch between targets. You’ll be able to block incoming attacks by pressing the R2 button, and can even parry them if you time your block just right. You’ll have a roll to dodge incoming attacks by pressing the R1 button. Pressing and holding down the L1 button will allow you to use your primary and secondary interactions, jump, and crouch, as if you were outside of combat, by pressing the corresponding buttons.
There are three different factions in Gothic 1 Remake which you can align yourself with: the Old Camp, the New Camp, and the Swamp Camp. And yes, as expected, this will be tied to some trophy objectives – more on these in a bit. The faction you choose will have an effect on how the other factions see you, and it will establish what some of the branching story paths you’ll explore will be.
Blue Ore is the currency used in the Valley of Mines, and it’s what you’ll need to collect to be able to purchase additional items and resources to aid you. While buying equipment and items is all fine and well, you should definitely try to collect all of the stuff that you run into along the way. Some of it will directly help you – fighting with your fists to survive might be fine, but a rusty sword can definitely make a difference – while others will be used for crafting or cooking.

Defeated a Molerat? Then you should loot it to get some meat so that you can grill it! That way, you’ll be able to eat it and heal a bit of your lost health. Something that can prove to be extremely useful once you get your hands on a bow and some arrows is to scavenge the body of a fallen enemy to also retrieve the arrows that you used to defeat it. That way, you’ll be able to reuse them against another target.
By completing quests and defeating enemies, your character will gain experience points. Once enough experience points are gained, you’ll get to level up. Leveling up will reward you with some Learning Points. Learning Points are very important, since they can be used with teachers to gain boosts to your stat values, as well as to earn new skills.
And now, let’s talk about the trophies! This one features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to try to add to your collection. The list is split into 18 Bronze trophies, 20 Silver trophies, and a pair of Gold trophies for you to work on. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? Along with the trophies that will pop as you complete each of the game’s story chapters, there are also trophies tied to joining each of the three factions, ranking up in any guild, obtaining all the maps, mastering all melee weapons, defeating 10 enemies with your fists, pickpocketing 20 characters, unlocking 20 locks with lockpicking, crafting your first item, crafting 10 potions, reading 10 books, defeating an enemy using fall damage, and completing the game in Permadeath Mode.

This new version does remember that the original is a challenging experience that does not hold your hand. Sure, you can technically go anywhere you want to within the Valley of the Mines. Until, you know, you run into an enemy that destroys you in a blink since you’re not powerful enough nor have enough equipment to survive. There are no quest markers or mini-map to follow, so you’ll need to pay attention to what the NPCs have to say so that you can carry on with your adventure. You can get your hands on a map early on, so be sure to check that out. You can then work on adding more maps as you explore the Valley of the Mines.

But what if you do feel like you could use some pointers here and there so that you can get the most out of your time with this particular release? Then you can use the Glossary in the game menu to check out what could best be described as a digital take on the classic manuals we used to get with physical game purchases back in the day. These tutorials will allow you to quickly get the hang of things, especially for the updated gameplay system. Gothic 1 Remake launches today on PlayStation 5 with a $59.99 price tag.
