Gobliiins Collection from Red Art Games brings us five classic entries in the series in a single package. Gobliiins is a point and click puzzle adventure game series from Cocktel Vision that got its start with the first title in the franchise way back in 1991. We then got yearly entries thanks to Gobliiins 2 in 1992 and Gobliiins in 1993, before a long hiatus of 15+ years until the launch of Gobliiins 4, which was the first 3D entry for the series. There was an even longer wait for fans between that game and Gobliiins 5, which was released in 2023. All games have been led by original creator Pierre Gilhodes.

Gobliiins Collection Review - 1

Gobliiins, the first game in the collection, features three goblin characters – Oups, Asgard, and Ignatius – who must do whatever it takes to save King Angoulafre, who has, for some reason, gone completely insane. The group must work together to collect the three items needed by the wizard Niak to create the cure that can bring back King Angoulafre to his former self. Each of the characters will have different abilities for you to consider. Oups is a technician who can pick up and use items. Asgard is a brawny character who can punch stuff and break stuff. His strength allows him to climb ladders and objects. As for Ignatius, he can use magic to zap things to, say, move objects around or sometimes make them come to life.

In Gobliins 2, after the King’s son, Prince Buffoon, vanishes, Fingus and Winkle must go to a faraway land to try and track him down. While that’s one fewer character when compared to the prequel, the two characters have more than enough abilities to make up for it. Fingus is the smart one, while Winkle is the one that brings the muscle. On top of that, you will sometimes need to command both goblins at once, as you time their actions just right. You’ll also have to travel between rooms to solve some puzzles.

Goblins 3 – later changed to Goblins Quest 3 – drops the extra vowels and once again cuts one extra character for gameplay purposes, so we’re only getting a single character to directly control: Blount. Directly is the keyword in that sentence, since Blount will be helped here and there by different sidekicks, such as Fulbert the snake and Ooya the magician. Oh, and Blount was bitten by a wolf, and that means he’ll be able to transform into an extra-strong werewolf at different times during this journey.

Gobliiins 4 goes back to the deliberate use of extra vowels in its name to signal it’s the fourth entry in the series as well as a return to its roots… but in 3D! Yes, as mentioned before, this is the first 3D entry in the franchise, and it once again brings us a trio of unlikely heroes who must work together to recover King Badigoince’s missing aardvark, Riri. Wait… the game actually features the trio from the original Gobliiins! Oups, Asgard, and Ignatius are back, and they’re ready to use their skills to save the day.

Gobliiins Collection Nintendo Switch Review - 3

Pierre Gilhodes took Gobliiins 5 to Kickstarter in 2022, seeking a rather conservative €3,000 in funding for the game’s development. This was complemented by a separate crowdfunding campaign on French website Ulule, which also set the same goal. Between both of these, and thanks to the support of 740+ backers, the project ended up securing €14,700+ in funding. Yes, there’s also a Gobliiins 6, which was also crowdfunded. No, that one is not part of this collection since it was released earlier this year. Gobliiins 6 – full title, Gobliins 6: The Madmen of the Year 1000 – is a direct sequel to Gobliins 2: The Prince Buffoon. It goes back to the 2D presentation of the other games in the series, and it once again features Oups, Asgard, and Ignatius as the main characters.
