Axe Cop from Electric Airship, Penguin Pop Games, and Red Triangle Games is a turn-based JRPG based on the beloved webcomic. It features the titular character, a tough and gruff police officer who prefers to wield an axe in battle. He found this particular axe at the scene of a mysterious fire and has been carrying it with him ever since. After Axe Cop obtains a device that can turn bad guys into good guys, he and his team set out on a mission to try to turn all bad guys ever, once and for all. But in order to do this, they will first need to locate the three magical gems that are needed in order to power up the machine. You’ll need to go up against Axe Cop’s most devious opponents, such as Dr. Doo Doo, Bad Santa Claus, Dr. Stinkyhead, and more.
If you’re not familiar with the series, Axe Cop is a webcomic created by brothers Malachai Nicolle and Ethan Nicolle way back in 2009. Malachai was a 5-year-old back then, while his brother Ethan was 29. Malachai is the one who worked on creating the ideas and stories for Axe Cop, with Ethan taking them and molding them into what became each of the entries in the webcomic.
You’ll begin your adventure with only Axe Cop in your group, but you’ll soon be able to add new characters. First up? The mighty Flute Cop! Explore each area by moving around with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, interacting with objects and other characters by pressing the A button as needed. This will allow you to learn more about the story as well as collect useful items.
Pressing the X button will bring up the menu. From there, you’ll be able to review the items you’ve collected, decide the order for each of your party members, review their individual status to check out their current stat values and field activities – more on these in a bit – as well as their elemental and status resistance percentage for things such as fire, water, earth, stun, and more.
You can quickly swap between characters by pressing the Y button. You can also go into the settings menu to activate the level of autorun for your character while exploring, enable or disable flashing, as well as adjust the music and sound volume.
Each character in your group will add their abilities to the mix. For example, Axe Cop can make good use of his axe to chop at cracked objects and debris. Flute Cop can, as expected, play his flute to interact with song statues. Dinosaur Soldier will be able to throw bombs that can easily go boom to aid you. Oh, and Dinosaur Soldier is actually Flute Cop, but he transformed into Dinosaur Soldier when he was exposed to dinosaur blood.
During combat, each of the good guys will be able to use regular attacks as well as special moves. The second ones will require that a character has enough energy to cover their cost. If they don’t have enough energy, then using regular attacks will help to recharge it. Axe Cop can use Enrage to boost his attacks, or ChargeChop to unleash a slash attack for massive damage. You know, in 2 turns. Flute Cop can use the Drop Guard song to lower a bad guy’s defenses, or the Mesmerize song to try to paralyze a bad guy.
Whenever one of the good guys obtains enough experience points, they will level up. When this happens, they will receive a boost to some of their stat values. If you level up one stat, then when that character levels up again, you’ll only be able to boost the same stat for half of that. This is why you’ll need to alternate which stats to boost while you find the best potential build for each of the good guys. Leveling up can also allow a character to learn a new special move.
What are some of the items that you can get during your mission? There’s the Dinosaur Horn, which you can sound during combat to call up a legion of dinosaurs that will attack your opponents. You can collect or buy a delicious can of soda that can restore 50 HP for a character. There’s also the Freezy, a delicious drink that can bring back a good guy who has fallen in battle while providing them with a bit of their HP back.
