Our Adventurer Guild from GreenGuy and Ultimate Games is a tactical RPG that puts players in the role of a guild master. After your friend, who was the former Guild Master of the declining Adventurer Guild, passes away, it’s up to you to continue his legacy as his named successor. Will you be able to give it your all and try to lead the Adventurer Guild to take it back to its former glory? Or will your actions finally lead to the group’s disbandment? Spend your time managing the day-to-day of the guild as you accept quests and send its members to complete them in order to hopefully build up the Adventurer Guild’s reputation.

The game offers five different difficulty settings for you to consider: Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, and Custom. The Easy difficulty setting brings a more forgiving experience, since enemies will have 20% less hitpoints, physical, and magical attack power. The Normal difficulty setting is the one that the dev recommends, since it offers the standard experience, balanced to offer a good challenge. The Hard difficulty setting will bump up the challenge, with enemies that have 20% hitpoints, physical, and magical damage, as well as a boost of 10 points to accuracy. Quest rewards will be lowered by 10%, and loot is reduced by 20%

If you go with the Very Hard difficulty setting, then you’d better be ready to take a beating if you so much as take a step in the wrong direction. Enemies will have 30% more hitpoints, physical, and magical damage, as well as 20 extra points to accuracy. Quest rewards will be lowered by 20%, and loot is reduced by 30%. The Custom difficulty setting will allow you to customize your journey, making it possible to remove permadeath, change the values for enemy damage, health, and accuracy, as well as those for your adventurers, the experience points and gold you receive, and more.

Our Adventurer Guild Review - 1

Once you’ve entered your name and let the adventurers know who you are, you’ll get to learn the basics thanks to the game’s tutorial that will play after you’re done reading your friend’s letter. You’ll be moving around the quest map by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad. When you move, your enemies will also move, and if you get too close to an enemy, they will start to chase you. You’ll have a short window to try to outrun them, but if they manage to catch up to you, then you’ll go into a turn-.based battle.

Combat will be of the turn-based variety, which means that on every round, characters will get a turn to act. The order in which each of your characters and the enemies will act will depend on their initiative value, as well as a random number between 0 and 10. The higher the value of this roll, the earlier that unit will get to act. The characters under your command will have a number of Action Points (AP) to spend on the actions they’ll perform. There’s also the option for a character to delay their turn once per round and send them to the end of the turn order. Do know this will give that character a 50% penalty on your initiative for the next turn’s calculation.

Each character will also start their turn with one Movement Action Point, which is needed for moving that character around the battlefield. On the plus side, it can also be used as a regular AP and spent for other actions. You might sometimes find yourself in a situation in which the odds are not in your favor. This is when you will need to make the most of the Bravery system, so that your adventurers can hopefully manage to turn the tide of battle before it’s too late. Each of your characters will have Bravery Points (BP) that they can spend on powerful temporary buffs. You’ll need to be careful because having too little BP will give that adventurer some minor debuffs, as well as risk them getting the shaken status if their BP reaches zero. A character can gain BP by defeating enemies, landing a critical hit, or receiving encouragement from allies with close relations.

As expected, your goal will always be to defeat your enemies before they wipe out all of your characters’ HP. If the HP for one of your adventurers reaches zero, this does not always mean they’ll die. Depending on their Bravery stat, they might be able to survive a killing blow, thus instantly healing themselves. Unfortunately, each killing blow that they do manage to survive will decrease their overall chance. The exception to this is when a character has the Shaken status, since that means they won’t be able to survive a killing blow.

When fighting against your enemies, you should always keep in mind each unit’s height. Some skills can’t reach their target if that target is too high compared to where your unit is located. There’s also the fact that characters can suffer falling damage if they’re pushed down from a tile, and the height difference is greater than 1. Some skills will be able to push enemy units in a direction. On top of that, if a unit is pushed and an obstacle is in the way, then they will suffer collision damage, based on the distance they’ve been pushed and their level. This can also be used to damage two enemies by pushing one into the other.

Rolling for initiative is not going to be the only roll that you’ll have to complete an attribute check. This will require that you roll a number from 1 to 20, so that the roll plus the modifier is greater than or equal to the difficulty. Rolling a 1 is always going to have you fail the attribute check. On the other hand, rolling a 20 will always make you succeed the attribute check. Fail a roll, and you’ll have a chance to spend BP for a reroll. Some rolls can be avoided if you’re carrying the right item at the right time.

Walking around the quest map and fighting against enemies will make your adventurers become exhausted. If the stamina bar is depleted, then your characters will enter the Exhausted state, and this will make them less efficient in combat. In order for them to recover their strength, they can set up camp. Camping will require that adventurers consume supplies to be able to heal. The number of meals needed will depend on the number of adventurers and their traits. While camping, you can spend Camping Points to perform special actions.

Since you’re the Guild Master, you’ll have to pick which quests to take on and which adventurers you’ll be sending, as well as what they will be taking with them. You should definitely purchase some supplies for them. Completing a quest will advance the time by a day. You don’t need to accept a quest every day, and you will also have the option of choosing to end the day early so that your adventurers can rest. With every 5 days that pass, a new week will begin. When a new week begins, the merchant’s wares will be reset, new adventurers will arrive, and you’ll need to cover your adventurers’ wages. Fail to pay them, and they’ll certainly not be happy about it!

When an adventurer obtains enough experience points, they will level up. When this happens, that character will roll for their stat increases, based on their class, traits, and talents. For every level up they get, they also have a chance to reroll their stat increases once. Every two level ups, that character will also receive a skill point. You can send adventurers to the training ground, where they can work on improving by learning new skills or even changing their character class. Each class will have its own skill tree to work on completing by spending the skill points obtained from leveling up.

As you progress further and further in the game and have your adventurers fight alongside each other, they will start to form relationships. Adventurers who have an affinity toward each other will more easily follow up on a chain attack, will have a higher chance to encourage each other when out on the battlefield, and more. Adventurers who successfully complete quests or assignments will gain positive relationship points, while failing them will have them lose points.

Trophy-wise, this release features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to try to add to your collection. The list is split into 30 Bronze trophies, 10 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies for you to work on. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? Some of the objectives to complete include successfully completing the tutorial quest, losing an adventurer in battle, recruiting new members to the Adventurers Guild, beating a troll, having at least 50,000 gold, successfully completing 50 quests, changing an adventurer to the Saint class, having an adventurer with 10 traits, defeating the Lich, and changing an adventurer to the Beastmaster class, to name some examples.

Our Adventurer Guild PS5 Review - 5

You’ll need to work on managing the guild itself as you make sure that you take on enough quests to have them grow in strength and abilities, as well as gain enough gold to be able to cover the wages of your adventurers. Be careful while exploring the map, since you can run into monsters that have a treasure symbol. These are for elite battles, which feature much stronger enemies while also granting better loot if you’re victorious. Our Adventurer Guild is out on PlayStation 5 with a $14.99 price tag.
