Deckline from Dolores Entertainment and Room Games brings us an atmospheric war-horror card game on Nintendo Switch. After you find yourself encircled and out of bullets, you decide to play one more game of Durak to try and distract yourself from what’s coming next. You’ve been left behind, and there are no more resources to keep you alive. It’s not only you, since your squad is also stuck here. It’s not all doom and gloom… at least not while the cards are being dealt.

Durak is a traditional Russian card game in which the goal is to get rid of all of your cards before your opponents do. The last player with any cards left is going to be the durak, which translates to idiot or fool. Once the game begins, cards are dealt from a 36-card deck, which is obtained from taking all 2s up to the 5s from a 52-card deck. Each player gets 6 cards after the deck has been shuffled, and the card from the bottom is selected to be the strongest, which is known as the trump suit, placed below the deck.

Once that’s been taken care of, players will take turns to attack each other by placing one or more cards of the same rank on the table. The player who is defending can do so by beating a card by using a higher card of the same suit, or by playing a trump card. As expected, a trump card can only be beaten by a higher trump card. After each turn, players draw cards from the deck to refill their hand up to 6 cards. If they have 6 cards or more, then no cards are drawn. Use the knife to end your turn. Oh, and if the electricity goes out, you can use the kerosene lamp.

Simple and to the point… right? While playing, you can use the right analog stick to look around you in order to take in the rather bleak scenery. Maybe a bomb lands here and there, which will make the whole place shake, the lights flicker, and your soul leave your body. This is why you might want to take a pill from the bottles on the right side of the screen to help a bit with the overall sense of anxiety. You know, because bullets continue to fly all over the place outside of your current location.

There are different endings to reach depending on how things play out during the match and what you do between turns, which helps to add to the overall replay value. You can also toggle the Story Mode on and off, depending on whether you want to take on this journey or just want to focus on playing Durak. Deckline is out today on Nintendo Switch with a $6.99 price tag.
