The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest from Acclaim and Elden Pixels is a Rated M for Mature procedurally generated Metroidvania-lite. You see, after a visit to the psychologist, things go terribly wrong, and you end up trapped within the mind of a video game developer! You’ll be taking on the role of Fletcher Howie Jr., and will need to give it your all to escape from this mental prison. Actions have consequences, and not doing anything is certainly not an option anymore. Will you manage to find a way to return to your reality?

The game earns its rating due to the topics it deals with, which is why the game features the following message before you start to play:

Names, characters, businesses, places, events, locales, and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or completely accurate with real life. We’d go so far as to say that most people in this story can be sought out and found. It’d be creepy if you do, but it’s possible.

This game is not intended as a substitute for the medical advice of physicians. The player should regularly consult a physician in matters related to his/her health, particularly to any symptoms that may require diagnosis or medical attention.

I previously had a chance to review Alwa’s Awakening from Elden Pixels on Nintendo Switch, as well as its sequel Alwa’s Legacy on Nintendo’s hybrid console – oh, and also A Void Hope! – so I was definitely more than up for checking out what The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest had to offer in the year 2026.

Once you gain control of your character, waking up naked in this bizarre, unknown world, you’ll be running through each area by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping by pressing the B button. Once you manage to find a gun, you’ll be able to shoot it by pressing the Y button. You’ll soon find a set of clothes. You know, so you don’t end up running around naked during the whole game. Interact with objects and other characters by pressing up on the left analog stick or the D-Pad. Press the + button to check the map or to review your inventory to see what items you’ve managed to collect so far.

You can use the series of vending machines you find during your journey to fast travel around the map as needed. You can also use the vending machines to grab yourself a hat. This is important, since the hat will protect you from one hit of damage. Lose the hat, and a single hit will end you, and you’ll be forced to respawn at the last vending machine you reached.

As expected of a Metroidvania, you’ll need to gain access to new abilities so that you can explore every single area in the game. The aforementioned gun is the first of such new abilities, since it will allow you to destroy blocks that would otherwise keep you from progressing further. Beat a boss, and you will get a very useful double jump that can allow you to reach new heights – quite literally! Find a specific NPC, and you’ll be granted a mighty slide that will make you invulnerable for a little bit.

The game’s soundtrack was created by Swedish electronic music group Dunderpatrullen, who certainly have experience working in the chiptunes genre, making them a good choice for this new release. The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest launches today on Nintendo Switch with a $14.99 price tag.
