Tau Cubis from Cube Mandarine is a neon-infused 3D sci-fi tower defense experience on PlayStation 5. Your task is simple: protect the cores located in your base. If the enemies steal your cores, then it’s game over! In the upper-left corner of the screen, you’ll be able to check the number of cores still in the base, the number of cores in the map, and the number of cores you’ve lost. Enemies will attack after entering through the blue portals and will leave by using the orange portals. This will allow you to get a better idea of what routes they’ll be taking, so that you can plan accordingly.

Your score will also be displayed at the top of the screen. You’ll be able to boost it based on your performance. Your score will also act as the in-game resources you’ll use for building and powering up your towers. You’ll gain resources by defeating enemy units. You’ll also be earning interest at regular intervals based on how many cores are in your base and your score. If no enemies reach your base, then you’ll get a Perfect bonus on top of the score multiplier you get based on the number of cores saved.

Use the right analog stick to zoom in and out of each map as needed. To build a tower, you’ll need to pick an empty spot on the map and then choose which tower you’ll set there. You’ll start with the MachineGun tower, which is rather inexpensive and effective at close range. This tower will follow orders based on the Priority System. Press the Triangle button to display the action area of a tower.

To change the priority targets of offensive towers, just press the Square button. Towers will attack in order of detection, target the fastest enemies first, target the slowest enemies first, target the unit closest to the base, or target the healer and disruptor units first. On top of all of this, you do need to know that towers will always first attack the enemies that are trying to steal cores. Press the L1 and R1 buttons to speed up or slow down time, so that you can take on each level at the pace that best suits you.

You can also improve and upgrade your towers in order to maximize their potential. Since you can use towers to block some paths so that enemies end up taking the remaining paths, you can place towers and upgrade them so that they have a wider area of effect and deal more damage. The longer the path your enemies have to take, and the more powerful your towers, the better your odds of survival.

Trophy-wise, this release features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to try to add to your collection. The list will be split into 17 Bronze trophies, 16 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies for you to work on. What are the objectives that you’ll need to complete in order to add that shiny Platinum trophy to your collection?

The list offers a pretty straightforward set of things for you to do, which include reaching the Gold Cannon rank for the different levels that the game will throw at you, doing this all over again while playing in Super Mission Mode – which does bump up the overall challenge – and getting all of the Gold Cannon ranks during your time with this game.

You’ll start with the MachineGun tower, which can be used to attack enemies from close range while not costing an arm and a leg. You’ll be unlocking additional towers as you progress further, such as, for instance, the Beam Tower. This one will attack all surrounding enemies and cause damage over time while also boosting the damage dealt by other enemies that are under this effect. Tau Cubis is out on PlayStation 5 with a $6.99 price tag.
