Temirana: The Lucky Princess and the Tragic Knights from Idea Factory International, Otomate, and ichicolumn is an Otome visual novel set in the titular mystical world. In Temirana, a person’s status and occupation are determined by the month in which they were born. When the third princess was born, she had a peculiar birthmark on her forehead. This led to some superstitious beliefs changing the little baby’s life forever, since she was forced to live in a house far from her family and the royal castle. With the Cursed Princess’s birthday approaching, she ends up attending the Helis Duelm, a dueling tournament, where everything changes.
It turns out that Cecilia Farias Terminara – who you’ll be playing as during your time with Temirana: The Lucky Princess and the Tragic Knights – has a special power that might probably be linked to the aforementioned birthmark: when her life is in danger, people and places around her shine, as if the world around her is trying to warn her.

At the Helis Duelm, she meets five gentlemen with a peculiar shine to them. The people who are aware of the Princess’s power warn her that this means the light is warning her of their danger… but she has a feeling that their glow is signaling something different. Plot twist: these five are going to protect the Princess as her knights, as well as act as the potential love interests in this Otome visual novel. Plot twist #2: none of them have experience with the sword, and some don’t even want to be knights in the first place, which is far from ideal for this particular situation.
The five are now known as the Tragic Knights – you know, since they are to protect the Cursed Princess – and offer five different story paths for you to explore as you get closer to them and maybe end up finding love along the way. If you’re new to visual novels, they’re games that, as their name suggests, offer a novel’s worth of content, presented in a visual format. Some offer shorter stories, while others have thousands upon thousands of words for you to absorb.

Some have voice acting, a very expensive resource, and that’s the case for this release. Do know that the game features voice acting in Japanese, so if you’re not familiar with the language, you’ll be doing a ton of reading in your near future! And, as mentioned before, this particular release is a visual novel of the Otome variety. What this means is that you’ll be playing as a female avatar who will be interacting with a variety of characters, with some of them offering a chance to take things further and establish a romantic relationship. Speaking of which, who are the five potential romantic suitors?
First up is Josephy Cornelhild Zondarig, the Prince of the ruined kingdom of Zondarig. He’s an interesting one since he lives with a troupe of traveling performers known as the Marveil Circus. He aims to hopefully restore the Zondarig Kingdom, making him a prideful individual with a large ego. Adel Narest is the complete opposite. He’s the eldest son of a humble farmer. His family is very poor and lives in the lower-class district of Samari Village. Adel is a calm and caring person who is always ready to look out for his nine – yes, nine! – younger siblings.
Next is Tobias Harbeck Frey, who happens to be the head of the noble Harbeck family… which has certainly seen better days. With his parents and grandparents long gone, Tobis remains the only master of the house. He’s not much into romance and pretty much hates life since he’s always so sick he can end up collapsing just from walking. Milan Herring is the owner of the aptly named blacksmith shop Herring, located in the commoners’ district of Barralboa Town. After dedicating his whole life to blacksmithing – literally starting to work on his craft from childhood – he’s a rather temperamental person who is a bit of a perfectionist.

The last member of the Tragic Knights is Kya Nelty. He’s an orphan who lives in the Nelty Foster Home. On top of that, he’s got a peculiar memory disorder which makes him forget everything that happens the day after it happens. Because of this, he wears a wooden tag around his neck at all times and makes sure to write down as much important information as possible for him to consult on a daily basis.
The game will get you started by having you select the protagonist’s name, as well as by picking the Month of Fortune in which your journey will begin. This will establish which of the story routes you’ll be playing through. Since this is a visual novel, you’ll be making a variety of choices along the way that will sometimes dictate which story branch you continue down. On top of those, there are also special Fortune Choices that will pop up during crucial moments when your life is in danger.
