PopSlinger Vol. 2 - Loveless Review - 1

I previously got a chance to do a PopSlinger review for the PlayStation 5 version last year, so I was definitely up for checking out what the sequel had to offer. I liked the prequel’s groovy soundtrack and the hand-drawn art style and presentation, and that’s still the case for PopSlinger Vol. 2 – Loveless.

Before you dive into this new, funky adventure, you’ll need to pick between one of the three available difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, and PopSlinger. The Easy difficulty setting will allow you to have maxed out health, with the music never decreasing and color combos that don’t break, thus making it an excellent option for those of you who are new to the series. The Normal difficulty setting will offer regular health upgrades, and the music will decrease if you take damage. As for the PopSlinger difficulty setting, you’ll have fewer health upgrades, color combos will break when you’re damaged, and the music will decrease when you’re damaged.

After the intro cutscene is over, the game will kindly send you into a tutorial stage so that you can learn the basics. You’ll be taking control of Agent Cooper McLaren by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad. Strafe by pressing and holding down the L2 button. You can attack your enemies by using the X or Square buttons, and you will need to pop enemies of the same color to perform a color combo.

By defeating four enemies of the same color, you’ll be able to boost your rank as well, so that you can gain access to special powers that you can activate by pressing the Triangle button. These include, for example, a shield that can protect you from harm for a short period of time, or a double shot that brings AKANE 2.0 to your side. You can also fill up the special bar below the combo meter to be able to unleash a special attack by pressing the Triangle and R2 buttons at the same time.

And now, let’s talk about the game’s trophies! This release features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection. The list is split into 4 Bronze trophies, 9 Silver trophies, and 4 Gold trophies for you to work on. Along with the trophies that will pop as you complete each of the levels that the game has to offer, there are also trophies for getting a B rank, getting an A rank, and getting an S rank, as well as for completing a color combo, a double color combo, entering Dream Time, and clearing any level in Time Attack Mode, to name some examples.

This release offers some replay value, since there are different endings for you to reach depending on the overall score that you get after completing all levels. This nudges you toward replaying levels so that you can improve your rank for that stage, going all the way up to an S rank. You can also replay levels in Time Attack Mode to try and complete them as quickly as possible. The game features voice acting, which helps to bring Agent Cooper McLaren, AKANE 2.0, and the rest of the characters to life.PopSlinger Vol. 2 – Loveless is out on PlayStation 5 with a $14.99 price tag.
