Wreckreation from THQ Nordic and Three Fields Entertainment brings us an open world arcade-style racing sandbox experience on PlayStation 5. It’s a game that mixes racing around a large 400 square kilometer area as you take on different challenges on your own, jump online to race against others – that is, if you have a valid PlayStation Plus subscription of the Essential, Extra, or Premium variety – or work on building a racing playground all of your own. It’s one where you can find a way to outrace, outsmart, and outstunt your opponents, all while you try not to crash and burn during the whole process.

If, like me, the first game that popped into your head after seeing the trailer and screens in this Wreckreation review was Burnout, that’s because some of the members of Three Fields Entertainment come from Criterion Games. You know, the studio that worked on the Burnout games. Before Wreckreation, Three Fields Entertainment worked on Dangerous Golf, a physics-based golf game on PlayStation 4 that was released back in 2016.

As soon as you boot up the game and the starting loading sequence is over, you’ll be thrown straight into your first Wreckreation race so that you can learn the basics and get the hang of things. You’ll steer your vehicle by using the left analog stick as you accelerate by pressing the R2 button. Hit the brakes by pressing the L2 button, which you can drift to take some of the sharper corners. This is also how you’re going to end up going in reverse. You can build up your boost by driving recklessly. Use your boost by pressing the X button to considerably increase your speed. Press the Circle button to look behind you so that you can try to stay one step ahead of your opponents. Open the map by pressing in on the Touchpad as needed.

Your progress will allow you to gain points for your license, which then reward you with unlockables you can use to customize tracks, adding some new elements here and there as you see fit. You can also locate extra items as you race around each segment of the map, so that you can have more options for how you work on each track. You can also customize your car (paint colors, finishes, wheels, boost flames, engine sounds, glass colors, tires, brake lights, boost flame), mix the time of the day – dawn, morning rush hour, lunchtime, afternoon rush hour, dusk, or midnight – and even mix the traffic, so you can choose between dynamic traffic, none, very light, light, medium, and heavy as you see fit.

And now… it’s trophy time! This one has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. The list is a long one, and it will be split into 31 Bronze trophies, 13 Silver trophies, and a pair of Gold trophies for you to work on. What are some of the objectives that you’ll need to complete for that shiny Platinum trophy? You’ll get trophies for getting into a head-on crash, breaking a billboard, opening the map, breaking an ad billboard, joining an online game, switching to another vehicle, discovering 5 roads, revealing the whole map, winning a race, creating your first event, and winning a road rage, to name some examples.

Along with racing around the map to find new races and race types so that you can add some additional points to your license, so that you can unlock new items, you’ll also be searching for additional stuff here and there while exploring. That way, you’ll be able to mix your world as you add new ramps and loops here and there, customize how your vehicle looks, switch around the time of day, and even pick the type of traffic that you’ll be running into. Wreckreation is out on PlayStation 5 with a $39.99 price tag.
