Mistonia’s Hope -The Lost Delight- from Aksys Games, Idea Factory International, and Otomate is an Otome visual novel that takes place in the kingdom of fairies. It’s a fairy tale in which love and revenge are at the core of the journey you’ll be taking through Grand Albion, a land under the rule of Queen Tia, the only Purefae. It’s set around the end of the 19th century, and it will be placing you in the role of Aprose E. Randolph, the daughter of Duke Randolph. After you end up losing your family, your loved ones, and even your hometown – all in one go – you swear to get your revenge on those who are responsible for those events.

It’s been 8 years since that faithful day, and you’ve worked hard to hide your true identity – going by the name Rose Cottingley – as you search for the truth of what happened way back then. This is why you’re presenting yourself as a humble maid at the mansion of one of the potential targets for your revenge. You’re in the capital city of Rowan, and must navigate through the very marked class system to find your way. The nobility is, of course, part of the upper class. You then have the middle class, the working class, and then all the way at the bottom… the lower class. As expected, those within the lower class usually suffer from discrimination from members of the other classes. As you learn more about the people at the mansion and those near them, will you continue with your plan, or will you change as you go in hopes of finding true love?

On top of that, there are different types of inhabitants for this land. You have the Purafae of a pure lineage born in Tir na nOg. As mentioned before, Queen Tia is the only known Purafae. You then have the Demifae, who are those of fae lineage, possessing strong fae abilities. Yes, this group is part of the nobility in the upper class. Next up are the Humaines. They are the original inhabitants of the surface world, and most of them are part of the middle class. And then, we have the Mingles. This is a disparaging term used for those who are deemed weaker than the Demifae. They may have warped wings or be unable to hide their wings, to name some examples of their imperfections.

There are five houses led by the Demifae descendants of the five Purefae leaders who founded the country. These are House Berstein, House Creswell, House Ward, House Sullivan, and House Lindell. It’s at House Berstein that you’ll be working as a maid. House Berstein descends from the Sylph, who are able to control the wind. House Creswell descends from the Spriggan, who were talented at stonework. House Ward descends from the Cu Sith, the most loyal family to the Queen. House Sullivan descends from the Will-o’-Wisp, who were able to control blue flame. As for House Lindell, they descend from the Puca, who were the Queen’s chamberlain.

If you’re new to visual novels, you should know that the games in this genre will allow you to experience what is usually a novel-sized story presented in a visual form… hence the genre’s name! Mistonia’s Hope -The Lost Delight- is an Otome visual novel. This means that you’ll be placed in the role of a female protagonist who will have the opportunity to find love along the way, based on your interactions with the different potential suitors. Some visual novels also feature voice acting, which is a very expensive resource that is not always an option for most releases, given its overall cost. Mistonia’s Hope -The Lost Delight- does features voice acting and, as has been the case for other visual novels from Aksys Games, it’s all in Japanese. That means that if you’re not familiar with the language, you’re going to be doing a lot of reading during your time with this game!

This one features six potential romantic suitors for you to get to know as you make your way through the different story beats: Edward, Alfred, Linus, Lucas, Ascot, and John. Edward is the next head of the Bernstein, and is an honest, fair, and calm individual who believes that those with power should aid those who don’t share the same privilege. Alfred is the current head of the Creswell house. He’s a rather serious and strict man who is always trying to stay one step ahead of the rest, ready to use anything at his disposal. Linus is the next head of the Ward house. He’s always ready to lighten up the mood and lift everyone else up… even if he sometimes forgets to take care of himself in the process.

Next up is Lucas, the expected head of the Sullivan house. He’s a bit of a pessimist who hates political strife, even if he’s a noble who will, eventually, need to participate in many political discussions in the future. Ascot is the representative head of the Lindel house. He’s got a reputation as a womanizer in high society, with men hating him and women always looking in his direction. The last one is John. He’s your attendant and childhood friend. Yes, he’s that type of character in this visual novel.
