Spindle from Deck13 and Wobble Ghost brings us an action adventure in which you’ll work on guiding the souls of those trying to cross over. Plot twist: you’re Death! The good news is that you won’t be doing this alone. You’ll be joined by a pig that will stand by your side every step of the way. Oh, and he can talk… a lot. Plot twist to the plot twist: The game takes place in a world where it seems that no one dies anymore. What will you do if no one dies? Is this something that you should fix? You’ll need to take on a series of dungeons to find out the solution to the problem as you make the most of your mighty scythe and your stylish Grim Reaper cape.

As you can tell from the trailer and screens in this Spindle review, the game has been inspired by the beloved The Legend of Zelda series, particularly by the classic entries in the franchise, such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The top-down perspective, the small keys that open doors, the blades of grass mocking you before you manage to recover your scythe so that you can cut them down, it’s all eerily familiar.
The dev took the game to Kickstarter back in 2021, seeking €55,000 in funding for the game’s development. Once the crowdfunding campaign was over, and thanks to the support of more than 1,700 backers, the project ended up with almost €60,000 in funding. The game was originally considered for a release on Steam and Nintendo Switch, and Deck13 jumped in to act as the game’s publisher for its launch this week.

After you’ve come to terms with your new role, you’ll be taking control of your character by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you run through each area. You can press the B button while moving to perform an evade roll. You can also use this button to interact with objects and other characters as needed. Once you recover your scythe, you’ll be able to swing away at enemies and obstacles by pressing the Y button.
As you destroy objects and defeat enemies, you’ll collect Odic cubes. These will be used to fill up your Odic force bar, located at the upper-left corner of the screen. Use this to recover your lost health by pressing and holding down the X button. Sometimes, the enemies you defeat and the objects you destroy can leave behind a life spark instead. These can be collected to automatically recover some of your lost health.

And if you want to 100% the game, you’re going to have to find some time to fish at every location where it’s possible. That way, you’ll be able to catch all of the different fish types in the game that Christopher needs to document in his Fishopedia! You can begin by catching the Green Scamp and Fire Fish near where you get the fishing rod. And don’t you forget that there are three different sizes for each of the fish types you can find! You can also try to find the many hidden Death Coins. Who knows, you might be rewarded for your efforts! Spindle launches tomorrow on Nintendo Switch with a $19.99 price tag.
