The ULTIMATE NERD RAGE is back in Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit – an all-new action platformer set in the AVGN universe! Play as The Nerd and blast your way across a host of pixel art levels crawling with zombies, mechanical skeletons, ghoulish reapers, and more!

Fans of James Rolfe‘s long-running Angry Video Game Nerd series will immediately feel at home with Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit. The game opens with a hilarious 5-minute classic-style AVGN episode, complete with James’s signature editing and delivery. It’s so authentic that it almost feels like you’ve just clicked play on YouTube — except this time, you get to live the nightmare instead of just watching it.

Gameplay-wise, this is very much a take on Mega Man by way of the Nerd. You’ll pick from six themed levels, each parodying a notoriously bad game from the show’s history. Controls are tight, and your trusty zapper can be upgraded multiple times. Each hit taken lowers your gun’s level, but the dropped power-up can be recovered if you act quickly. Keeping your gun powered up is crucial since the base weapon’s slow, limited shots can make you feel helpless in later levels.

Every stage feels like a pixel-perfect callback to the Nerd’s reviews, featuring deliberately frustrating mechanics that long-time fans will instantly recognize. Expect brutal knockback into pits, respawning enemies, awkward jump arcs, and an inability to crouch — all by design. The humor lies in how intentionally bad some elements are, faithfully recreating the rage-fueled experiences that made AVGN famous. Each stage should take you less than half an hour to beat.

Despite all its deliberate annoyances, the level design shines. Each area nails the 8-bit aesthetic, and the challenge feels straight out of the Nintendo Entertainment System era. Optional modifiers let you crank the pain to Hard or ease it up a bit — perfect for those who value their sanity. And with roughly 15 minutes of cutscenes spread across the intro, mid-game, and finale, it’s like getting an exclusive AVGN episode right inside the digital cartridge.

Bosses are old-school pattern-memorization fights with massive health bars. Each one’s a clever nod to past Nerd episodes, but the Fester’s Quest fight crosses into pure frustration — especially if you’re stuck with the weakest gun, which barely gives you a window to land a hit. It’s the perfect AVGN cycle: laugh, groan “oh yeah, that moment” and drop a few curses. This wouldn’t be an AVGN game without its signature vulgarity. Expect pixelated middle fingers, a ton of F-bombs, and beer cans serving as health pickups. It’s crude and immature in the best way — perfectly matching the humor fans have loved for two decades. This is why the game is Rated M for Mature.

Trophies are straightforward and will certainly please fans. The list is split into 6 Bronze trophies, 2 Silver trophies, and 10 Gold trophies for you to work on. Several of them are tied to story progression and boss fights, while others reward special feats like beating a level without taking damage (good luck with this one!) or defeating bosses with the Pickle, a recurring AVGN side character who appears when you’re on your last life. The trophy set encourages replayability, so you’ll be sure to go back to this one more than once!

Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit is a game that even those new to 2D action games can enjoy. Yes, this is a tough-but-fair retro platformer, packed with tight controls and classic charm. But for those of us who’ve followed the Nerd since the mid-2000s, every level, insult, and reference lands twice as hard — it’s pure nostalgia wrapped in profanity and pixels. A fitting tribute to the angry man who made bad games fun to watch. Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit launches on PlayStation 5 on October 23.
