Lost Soul Aside from Sony Interactive Entertainment, UltiZero Games, and China Hero Project brings us an action RPG in which you must do whatever it takes to rescue your sister. For this single-player adventure, you’ll be taking on the role of Kaser and will embark on a mission to bring back your sister, Louisa, all while saving humanity from the evil Voidrax. The Voidrax are invaders from another dimension who are set on conquering this world. Things were bad before the invasion, what with the oppressive Empire basically forcing some of the people to join the GLIMMER resistance, but the Voidrax have taken things to a whole other level!
At least you won’t be doing this on your own, since you’ll be joined by Arena. Arena is your companion who can transform into weapons and other elements to aid you. And now, for the twist: Voidrax is a dragon-like warrior who is haunted by his past actions. He was part of many previous invasions that led to the conquest of other worlds – just like Kaser’s – and is now ready to atone for his sins. Kaser and Arena must now work together as they aim to improve their abilities so that they can eventually have a shot at defeating the evil commander Aramon, who aims to harness the planet’s Life Nexus to increase his power even further. And yes, as you can tell from the trailer and screens in this Lost Soul Aside review, the game has certainly been inspired by the beloved Final Fantasy series.

After the starting story cutscene is over, you’ll take control of Kaser by using the left analog stick, as you use the right analog stick to move the camera around as needed. Sprint by pressing in on the left analog stick. Jump and double jump by pressing the X button. Attack enemies by pressing the Square button. Use a heavy attack by pressing the Triangle button. You can use these two attacks to perform combos, such as an aerial launch so that you can then juggle enemies up in the air, or a powerful triple attack on the ground that is slower but deals considerable damage.
Block incoming attacks by pressing the Circle button. This will consume some of your stamina. You can also try to dodge by pressing the L1 button. This will consume some of your stamina. Special attacks from enemies – marked by a glowing blue circle around them – can be interrupted by performing a perfect block. When you run out of stamina, you’ll be able to perform a slower roll that can still prove to be useful. If you dodge at the right time, you can perform a perfect dodge and gain one Unbound Energy. After this, press the Square button to consume the Unbound Energy and perform a Blitz Burst that will deal extra damage.

After performing some attacks, Kaser will flash blue for a brief moment. When this happens, press the R2 button for Burst Pursuit, which will deal extra damage. You can press the L2 button and the Square, Triangle, or Circle buttons to use one of the Arena Powers you’ve equipped. Each of the equipped Arena Powers will have a separate energy bar, which will replenish as you attack enemies. Once Kaser’s Fusion Energy bar fills up, you can press the L2 and R2 buttons at the same time to activate a Fusion Merge. During Fusion Merge, Kaser consumes Fusion Energy while boosting the strength of all of his attacks.
While exploring each area and battling against the evil Voidrax, you should keep an eye on your stamina and health. You can use an item by pressing left, right, up, or down on the D-Pad. That way, you could quickly heal some of your wounds before being knocked out and having to reload from the last checkpoint you reached. You could also use a potion in order to reduce stamina consumption, which will make it a lot easier to dodge incoming attacks. While you have access to a minimap, you can also open your map by pressing the Touchpad on the DualSense controller.

As you defeat enemies and bosses – and open up special treasure chests – you’ll get to earn experience points. After obtaining enough, you’ll level up and earn points that you can spend at the skill tree to unlock new upgrades and abilities for Kaser. Unlock nodes by spending skill points, which you’ll obtain for every 100 Voidrax crystal shards. Some of these potential upgrades and unlocks include a sword flurry heavy attack combo, adding a 5% chance of not consuming any materiasl when crafting items, increasing your attack by 5 points, adding health restoration by 10%, or activating an electric flash that can make it easier to add a dodge while also attacking enemies on your path.
The Divine Gold that you collect along the way can be spent at the shops you find to purchase items and materials. Different merchants will offer different things for you to purchase. Buy a Tranquilizer to restore 2.5 Fusion Energy right away. Purchase a Neutralizer to remove all status ailments and greatly boost status resistance for 5 seconds. You can also buy materials that you can use for crafting. You can never have enough starlight nectar, lumo mushrooms, frost orchids, moonwort herb, goldendell berries, or sharp keratin.

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to aim for. It’s a long list that is split into 20 Bronze trophies, 14 Silver trophies, and Gold trophies for you to work on. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? Along with the trophies that will pop once you complete the prologue and work your way through the different story chapters, some of the objectives to complete for the remaining trophies include collecting all trinkets, buying all key items in the stores, collecting all crafting recipes, collecting all skills, and finding all documents, to name a few examples.

The game’s graphics are nice, and you can choose between Performance Mode to boost the overall framerate or go with Quality Mode to bump up the resolution and textures as much as possible. This release is fully voice acted, which is always appreciated when properly implemented with a cast that knows what it’s doing. Lost Soul Aside is out on PlayStation 5 with a $59.99 price tag. There’s also the Lost Soul Aside Digital Deluxe Edition, which, along with the base game, includes the following:
• Three weapon fragment cosmetics: Genesis Thunder, Everlasting Ember, and Crystal of Abyss
• Arena skin: Golden Blaze
• Ruby Necklace health booster
• Gemstone Badge XP booster
• Digital soundtrack
• Digital art book
