SHUTEN ORDER from Spike Chunsoft and DMM Games takes place in a world steeped in despair and chaos that is 168 days away from its end. How did we get to this point? A religious organization known as Shuten Order emerges from the darkness, yearning for the end of humanity. For some reason, the group manages to gain many followers, and it ends up forming a small nation-state called Shuten. During the festival celebrating its founding… the leader of the Shuten Order is murdered! Soon after this, you wake up with no recollection of what has happened. It’s then that you’re visited by two self-proclaimed angels who have something very important to share: you’re the founder who has been murdered, and have been revived thanks to the might of divine power.

Things didn’t go as planned, so even though you’re alive, the resurrection process was not completed properly. This is why your memories are gone, and your new life has been limited to a measly four days! Since this is certainly bad news, you’ll need to work hard on completing what is being called God’s Trial before your time runs out. The task at hand? To identify and kill the one who murdered you! To not blow your cover, you’ll be given the alias Rei Shimobe, as you become a detective who will be investigating to learn more about the five ministers of the Shuten Order, who are the main suspects. Time is of the essence, which means you won’t be able to investigate all of them as much as you’d like to. The choices you make will have big consequences, and will have an impact on what your future ends up being… or if you even have one at all!
For this Rated M for Mature game, you’ll be taking on a collection of five different experiences that are tied to the five potential suspects. Who are the suspects? The Ministry of Security, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Science, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health. Depending on which route you take, your multi-genre journey will be different. Taking on the Ministry of Security? Then you’ll be playing through a stealth action horror game as you flee from the legendary killer Nephilim while investigating suspect Manji Fushicho, playing from a 3D top-down perspective.

You’re going to investigate the Ministry of Justice? Then you’ll be working on solving a murder that is tied to the wealthy Kukuri family, so that you can expose the killer who is linked to suspect Kishiru Inugami, wrapped in a mystery adventure. As you piece together the evidence collected during your investigation, you’ll be able to get closer to solving the mystery at hand. When focusing on the Ministry of Science, you’ll be taking on a multi-perspective visual novel that offers different points of view over the events presented to you. By making the most of the available flowchart, you’ll have to find a way to survive until the end of a scenario that features multiple chronologically branching routes.
If the Ministry of Education is the one that you’ll be dealing with, then you’ll be presented with… a romance adventure? Your suspect will be Honoka Kokushikan. You’ll be tasked with building connections with three heroines, and must use clues to find them on the school map as you aim to interact with them. By boosting their affection level based on the dialogue choices you make and completing romance events, you’ll be able to unlock the confession phase at night. It’s then that you must pick the right words before your time is up so that you can win them over. Oh, and did I mention that you’ve been poisoned?

The final potential suspect in SHUTEN ORDER is the Ministry of Health, Yugen Ushitora. As if having been murdered and resurrected for only four days was not bad enough, going after the Ministry of Health will place you within a death game that you’ll need to survive while interrogating suspect Yugen Ushitora. This one has escape room adventure gameplay mechanics, so you’ll need to find a way to get out of the locked room as you complete trials and puzzles, for which one wrong move could lead to your end!

SHUTEN ORDER launches next week on Nintendo Switch on September 5 with a $49.99 price tag. You can also get the SHUTEN ORDER Deluxe Edition for $64.99. This version includes the base game, as well as the Visual Art Book and Mini Soundtrack. The Visual Art Book features character design and background sketches from the game, including many never-before-seen visuals. The Mini Soundtrack gives you access to 12 tracks from the game’s music. If you do end up getting just the game, then you’ll need to know there’s currently no option for buying the Visual Art Book and Mini Soundtrack as an upgrade pack or DLC for this release.
And if you pre-order SHUTEN ORDER from the Nintendo eShop, you’ll be able to receive a Tookyo Games original digital novel supervised by Kazutaka Kodaka, “Before the Murders – case: Manji Fushicho,” which serves as a prequel to the main game. This one is set five years before the events of SHUTEN ORDER, and it presents to us the story of Manji Fushicho, before she ended up becoming the Minister of Security.
