WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers from Leenzee and 505 Games is a Soulslike action RPG set in the land of Shu in the late Ming Dynasty. It presents us with an alternate history take with a heavy supernatural twist, wrapped in a challenging experience with monsters that are ready to kill you in a blink. You’ll be placed in the role of female pirate Bai Wuchang, who is, unfortunately, suffering from a classic case of amnesia on top of the horrific Feathering disease. Those inflicted by the Feathering disease are driven insane and end up transforming into monstrous entities out for blood. WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is fully voice acted, which is certainly appreciated.
Once your journey begins, you’ll be using the left analog stick to control Wuchang as you use the right analog stick to pan the camera around as needed. Press the X button to interact with objects, mechanisms, or NPCs. Use light attacks by pressing the R1 button and heavy attacks by using the R2 button. Pressing in on the right analog stick will allow you to lock onto an enemy. Press the Circle button to dodge so that you can hopefully avoid incoming attacks. Hold down the Circle button to sprint. Your weapon skill will be mapped to the L1 button. Press the L2 button to use your equipped discipline skill. The D-Pad can be used to switch between items by pressing up or down. Use an item by pressing the Square button. An important one is your Manna Vase. This item can be used to recover some of your lost health, and it has a limited number of uses. It will be refilled when you use a shrine to enter the dream to fully recover your health. This will also make all enemies in the world respawn.

You can switch weapons by pressing right on the D-Pad and can switch spells by pressing left on the D-Pad. Cast spells by pressing the Triangle button. Your first weapon will be an ancient sword, and you can gain other weapons as you progress further. These are split into five different weapon types: one-handed swords, longswords, axes, dual blades, and spears. You can also find armor for your head, chest, hands, and legs to improve your overall stat values. Armor will provide three stat types: mitigation, resistance, and durability. Mitigation will lower damage from specific damage types. Resistance slows the buildup of related status effects. Tenaticy renders your attacks more difficult to interrupt.
You can equip up to three Jade Pendants at any given time. Each Jade Pendant will grant you unique buffs to boost your combat power. Most will take effect when equipped, but some will require that specific conditions are met for them to activate. Along with weapons and other equipment, you can also draw upon the help of powerful spells to aid you on this quest. Spells are split into magic, feathering, and others. The power of your spells will be boosted depending on your control state for each type. Casting spells will consume Skyborn Might, and you won’t be able to cast a spell if you don’t have enough to cover the cost. Some spells will also grant alacrity. If you’re hit when casting a spell, alacrity will activate, and you will avoid being damaged.

As you defeat enemies, they will end up dropping whatever it is that they’re carrying. Any items that you don’t collect in time will end up being sent to the Donation Box. Any key items that you don’t pick up will also end up in the Donation Box so that you can go and collect them to carry onward with your mission. You can collect Red Mercury during your journey, which is needed for improving your stat values. Red Mercury can also be spent as currency to purchase items. You can gain a character level by refining Red Mercury at the Impetus Repository.
Increasing your character’s level will also boost your maximum Madness, which will make it easier to avoid entering the Madness Descends state. Red Mercury will transform into Red Mercury Essence when refined, and you can then spend this to unlock special nodes. Check out the different nodes at the Impetus Repository and work on unlocking the ones that favor your playing style. Oh, and some nodes will require that you spend special resources to unlock them, so be sure to collect every single item that you find!

You can increase vitality to boost your maximum health. Increasing stamina will boost your maximum stamina. Raise your strength to increase the damage of strength control weapons. Increase agility to boost the damage of agility control weapons. Boost magic to increase the damage of magic control weapons. Boost feathering to increase the damage of feathering control weapons. All of these stats will also affect your physical defense. Strength, agility, magic, and feathering will also affect your stat defense.
Defeating humanoids and dying will increase your overall Madness. If you end up dying when you’re at maximum Madness, then a powerful demon will manifest where you fell. Only by defeating this mighty demon – who mimics your attacks and abilities – will you be able to reclaim the lost Red Mercury. Do know that this demon can also be damaged by other creatures and enemies so that you can use this to your advantage. Be careful because if you’re defeated after the demon is summoned, then your Madness will be reset to zero, and all of the Red Mercury you had dropped will be lost for good.

The game features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. The list is split into 24 Bronze trophies, 11 Silver trophies, and 4 Gold trophies. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum trophy? There are trophies tied to achieving each of the different endings that the game has to offer, as well as defeating each of the bosses. On top of that, you can get trophies for acquiring all weapons, finding all Jade Pendants, fully enhancing your Manna Vase, enhancing a weapon to the maximum, offering Blood at a Shrine, acquiring a discipline skill, summoning an NPC to aid you, defeating 20 Bamzoozlings, defeating 6 Inner Demons, activating every single shrine, fully unlocking all of Tao Quing’s stock, and fully unlocking all of Wu Gang’s stock, to name some examples.
