Dead of Darkness from eastasiasoft and Retrofiction Games is a Rated M for Mature 2D survival horror game set in 1985. You’ll be taking on the role of private investigator Miles Windham, who ends up following a lead on the mysterious death of his daughter, which takes him to Velvet Island on the Celtic Sea, West of England. As soon as you arrive there, you start to realize that something is very much off with the island’s residents. What starts as a rather hostile reaction to your presence soon escalates into outright violence. You’ll now have to find a way to survive if you want to have a chance to find the truth about what happened to your daughter. The only good news of it all? You won’t have to do this alone. You’ll soon be joined by new ally, Olivia, who will prove to be a useful companion.

You’ll be taking control of your character by using the left analog stick as you aim your gun with the R1 button and shoot by pressing the X button. Run by pressing and holding down the Square button. Press the Square button while aiming to reload your weapon. Change weapons and use item quick select with the D-Pad. Quick use an item by pressing the R2 button as needed. Check your map by pressing the Touchpad on the DualSense so that you can get a better idea of where you should go next.
You should always scan your environment to find important elements or items to interact with. You can do this by pressing and holding down the L1 button. This will make all points of interest pop up on the screen until you let go of the L1 button. Once you’ve spotted them, you can interact with points of interest by pressing the X button. Any items you collect will be added to your inventory, which you can check by pressing the Triangle button.

You’ll get to locate files as you explore each area that you visit. Some of the information you find in files can help you obtain a clue. You can also obtain clues by interacting with some specific points of interest. Clues can then be interacted with in one of three ways: use, combine, and ponder. You can use a clue with a point of interest. You can combine the clue with another clue or item. You can also use ponder to gather more information about a clue.
The game features a full trophy list with a Platinum waiting for you. And since this one is a Cross-Buy release, you’ll be able to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game to your PS5 console, and each one will have its own trophy list with a Platinum trophy. Each list will be split into 25 Bronze trophies, 12 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies for you to work on. What will you need to do for that shiny Platinum? You’ll get a trophy for starting your journey at Graham Manor. From there, trophies will pop at a steady pace as you progress further in the game’s story, solving puzzles and defeating the bosses that this experience will throw at you, all while getting new weapons and maxing them out. You’ll also have to collect all clues, consume 50 painkillers, and collect all files, all in a single run. Are you up for the challenge?
