Kvark from Latest Past and Perun Creative is an old-school-inspired first-person shooter set in an alternative 1980s Czechoslovakia. Things have gone very wrong at an underground uranium mining facility, and you must now find a way to escape its crumbling walls as you take on the remaining staff – decked out in radiation suits – or the deadly giant, mutated rats. Oh, and there are also cameras keeping track of where you are, as well as robots that will shoot at you on sight.

Once the introductory video is over, you’ll be able to play the game in one of the three available difficulty settings: Pioneer, Comrade, or Intruder. Pioneer is the easiest one of the bunch, which will allow you to explore each area as you take your time to let it all sink in since enemies won’t be much of an issue. Comrade offers the standard Kvark experience, with enemies that will challenge you without making you feel overwhelmed. As for Intruder, it’s a difficulty setting best reserved for those of you who have plenty of experience with first-person shooters since enemies will punish you for any mistakes that you make, forcing you to start all over again.

With the game being an FPS, that means you’ll be taking control of your character with the left analog stick as you use the right analog stick to look around you. You can sprint if you press in on the left analog stick and crouch by pressing in on the right analog stick as needed. Jump with the X button, and interact by pressing the Triangle button. You can aim your weapon by pressing the L2 button and can use it by pressing the R2 button. Cycle between your available weapons by pressing the L1 and R1 buttons. Reload your weapon by pressing the Square button. You can use your flashlight by pressing up on the D-Pad. Pressing left on the D-Pad will be for grenades.

You’ll begin your journey after grabbing a wrench that has been casually left outside of your cell. It will be thanks to this that you’ll be able to destroy the chains that were keeping you trapped. While a wrench is a good option, you might want to get your hands on something that packs a bit more oomph. Maybe you should search some of the nearby cells to try and find a tunnel that can lead you to a powerful machine gun and some extra ammo. You should also search for other secret spots so that you can get your hands on some armor since it will grant you some shield coverage that can absorb damage before you start to lose your health. Be sure to search the trash bins so that you can hopefully find some extra ammo, protective armor, or food to heal your wounds.

The game features a full trophy list with a shiny Platinum for you to work on adding to your collection. The list is split into 17 Bronze trophies, 10 Silver trophies, and 5 Gold trophies. What are some of the objectives to complete? Along with the trophies that will pop as you complete each of the story chapters, there are also trophies for destroying all cameras in the level, locating all secrets, killing 3 enemies with a single explosion, collecting all the cans from a vending machine, emptying 50 trash bins, finishing a level without being injured, using Anehtium, defeating 200 Kvark employees, defeating 200 mutants, reading all notes, finding all posters, and picking up the soap – just be careful and don’t drop it!
