Exo-Calibre from eastasiasoft and Vampixel brings us an old-school-infused 2D shoot ’em up on PlayStation 5. You’ll be taking on the role of one of three Ex-Calibre Knights, elite pilots who take control of state-of-the-art exo-mechs. Your task? To protect the whole world as you take on the evil AI drones from Exo-Tech that have gone haywire. Each of the three available pilots will have different shoot types and melee weapons for you to consider as you destroy everything on your path, thanks to your powerful arsenal. The game offers a Story Mode, in which your character will have more health and unlimited lives, as well as an Arcade Mode, in which you’ll have less health and limited lives to complete the game. You can also unlock a Boss Rush Mode, in which you’ll take on all bosses one after the other, and a Time Rush Mode that will have you trying to do as much as possible within a strict time limit.

As you defeat enemies or bosses, you’ll get a chance to collect some scraps along the way. When you spot a piece of scrap, you might want to try and shoot it several times until it breaks apart into smaller pieces since this will reward you with additional scraps. You can use scraps between levels to purchase upgrades and boosts for your Ex-Callibre knight. These include increasing the damage dealt by your weapon, boosting the max HP, increasing its movement speed, or adding some extra lives so that you can keep going in case you end up making too many mistakes… at least in Arcade Mode since you have unlimited lives in Story Mode.

Given the game’s nature, the controls will be simple and to the point. You’ll be taking control of the Ex-Calibre Knight of your choice by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad as you shoot at enemies by pressing the R2 button. Any enemies that get too close for comfort can be attacked by using your melee attack with the Square button. You can boost for a bit to increase your speed by pressing the L2 button, which can be useful when you’re trying to avoid incoming attacks or stop your Ex-Calibre Knight from crashing into an enemy… since you can boost through enemies to deal a ton of damage! Oh, and your melee attack can be used to reflect incoming projectiles as well.

The game features a full trophy list with a Platinum for you to add to your collection. And since this is a Cross-Buy title, you’ll be able to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, and each one will have its own trophy list for you to work on. Each list will be split into a single Silver trophy and 11 Gold trophies for you to work on. The objectives that you’ll need to complete include defeating each of the bosses that the game will throw at you, beating the game for the first time, collecting 50 scrap in a single playthrough, defeating 100 enemies in a single playthrough, boosting through 20 enemies in a single playthrough, and reflect 100 bullets in a single playthrough.
