The Tale of Bistun from Black Cube Games and IMGN.PRO is an action-adventure inspired by a poem from the 12th century. The poem is known as Khosrow and Shirin, a famous tragic romance by Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. After launching on Steam back in 2022, the game is now ready to go on Sony’s current-gen console. For this new journey, you’ll be taking on the role of an amnesiac stone carver who is now making his way up the slopes of the titular Mount Bistun. It won’t be a simple quest, as you’ll have to fight against legions of monsters who are ready to tear you to pieces… if you’re not careful. The good news? You have access to powerful magical abilities, as well as your mighty melee attacks that pack a punch. A narrator will join you on this adventure, bringing the story and its characters to life.

The Tale of Bistun Review - 1

For this isometric adventure, you’ll have to find a way to remember who you are and what it is that you do as you explore the different levels on offer – yes, levels because this one is a bit linear, which is not bad! You’ll get to learn the basics during the first level as the game slowly introduces all gameplay mechanics so that you can get the hang of things. By the time you find your first enemy, you’ll be ready to attack, dodge, and go in for the finishing hit! Just be careful because even the smallest of enemies can be dangerous if it’s joined by others.

You’ll be controlling your character with the left analog stick as you sprint by pressing and holding down the X button. You’ll attack by pressing the Square button and can roll by pressing the Circle button. Your roll is a very important ability since it can help you avoid incoming attacks while also making you invulnerable for a small window. If you need to interact, you can do so by pressing the Triangle button. Your active ability will be mapped to the R1 button. This one will have a cooldown period to balance things out, and it will change depending on the weapon you’ve equipped.

The Tale of Bistun Review - 2

While exploring each area, you’ll realize that the blight has expanded through the land, and you’ll have to find a way to liberate the different trees that are being squeezed by it. This will lead you to find some wise trees that can help you learn more about what is going on and about who you really are. What will the memories from your past reveal as you progress further and further on this journey? You’ll have to pay The Tale of Bistun to find out! Hint: be sure to destroy all pots that you find, since you never know what you can find!

The game features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to add to your collection. And since this one is a Cross-Buy release, if you own a PS5 console, you can download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game. Each trophy list will be split into 22 Bronze trophies, 13 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies. What will you need to do to work your way through to that shiny Platinum? Along with beating each level in the game, some of the objectives to complete include destroying your first enemy, using your hatchets to break something stone-like, carving your first inscription, acquiring your first special attack, carving your first statue, fully upgrading your weapons, reading all stone tablets, and making 75 birds fly away, to name some examples.
