Smells Like a Mushroom from Red Limb Studio is a bizarre and quirky action game in which you’re a carrot who must save the universe from fungi. It turns out that the Milky Way has been infected by evil creatures called Magic Mushrooms. Knowing that they must be stopped, Carrotado decides to go to space to defeat them before they can continue to destroy other planets. Carrotado has already lost his wife – which happens during the prologue, which will serve as a short tutorial for you to learn the basics – so he knows what can happen if the Magic Mushrooms are left unchecked. You can go through this journey on your own or in local co-op.

The game can be played in one of three difficulty settings, with a fourth one for you to unlock. They are Easy, Normal, and Hard. Easy will be a good option for those of you who are more of a pacifist since enemies won’t pose much of a challenge. Normal offers the standard experience with a good challenge. Hard will bump things up with enemies that are more aggressive and ready to punish you for your mistakes. Nightmare is the one that you will have to unlock since it would feel too overwhelming if it were available right from the start.

You’ll use the left analog stick to walk as you use the right analog stick to look around. Run by pressing the R1 button, dash with the L1 button, and interact with the Square button. Jump and double jump with the X button as needed. You can attack by pressing the R2 button. Change between your available weapons by pressing up or down on the D-Pad. Zoom with the L2 button so that you can get a better look at things. Oh, and you can open your inventory by pressing the Triangle button to check your arsenal.

By collecting scrap during missions, you’ll be able to spend it in order to upgrade weapons and abilities so that you can stand a chance against the evil mushrooms. What can you buy with your hard-earned scraps? You can boost your hearts so that you can take more damage before being defeated, add an extra life so that you can respawn at the last checkpoint, lower attack cooldown, increase the magazine for each of your weapons, or unlock new weapons.

This game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on adding to your collection. It’s not a short list since it’s split into 27 Bronze trophies, 15 Silver trophies, and a pair of Gold trophies. What do you need to do for that Platinum? You’ll have to complete each mission that sends you to explore a different planet, as well as collect the special customization items hidden in each one. On top of that, for each planet you explore, there will be 3 secrets for you to find, with four trophies tied to said objectives: one for finding each secret and another one for finding all 3 secrets on a planet. If you need some extra help, you can check out this Smells Like a Mushroom Trophy Guide.
