Entropy Survivors is a bullet hell roguelite with 3D visuals, customizable weapons, and online co-op. Players simultaneously control Froggie, a sharp-shooting astronaut frog, and GERM, their melee-wielding mech, as they battle waves of the increasingly strong and numerous forces of Entropy.

Entropy Survivors by Moving Pieces Interactive and First Break Labs is a bullet hell roguelite that challenges players to control two characters simultaneously. Froggie, a sharp-shooting frog, handles ranged attacks guided by an aim line and triggered using the R2 button. He rides atop GERM, a powerful melee mech that delivers close-combat support with attacks triggered by pressing the L2 button. This dual-character system adds depth and intensity to the fast-paced gameplay.

Entropy Survivors Review - 1

In Entropy Survivors, gameplay revolves around entering an arena and surviving a set period while obliterating waves of enemies using your equipped skills and other abilities you discover on the battlefield. Since this is a roguelite, you’ll return to level 1 each time your character falls, collecting blue rocks (experience points) and gold to level up during the run. The gold you gather carries over, allowing you to unlock weapons and abilities in the game hub for future attempts. Thanks to the gold collected, this progression system ensures that even a poor run contributes to your growth. Within the first half-hour, the game ramps up into a chaotic frenzy, with dazzling skills and relentless enemy attacks creating an intense, action-packed experience.

Upon leveling up, you can select upgrades from a skill tree, offering the freedom to customize your characters to suit your playstyle. You also have the option to switch your base class and enhance your character’s core attributes or increase the likelihood of specific power-ups appearing. As you progress, you’ll unlock permanent upgrades, adding long-term progression to your journey. However, each level-up moment briefly pauses the action with a pop-up that presents three upgrade options to choose from. Getting a level up bonus is part of the game flow, but the constant interruptions took some time to get used to.

In the game hub, each skill can be upgraded independently across six different facets, offering quite deep customization options. However, this level of complexity felt overwhelming during the first few hours of play. One thing that stands out immediately is how technical the game feels, requiring time to fully grasp its mechanics.

Entropy Survivors Review - 2

While Entropy Survivors offers intense and rewarding gameplay, it’s not quite the quick pick-up-and-play experience one might hope for. Levels demand a few minutes of survival, and the time required in the game hub to fine-tune your character’s customization adds to the investment. This makes it less suited for bite-sized sessions and more challenging for players who prefer a casual, low-commitment approach to their campaigns.

Progressing through Entropy Survivors feels like a blend of skill and luck. Success relies on your ability to handle relentless waves of enemies with precision, while luck plays a role in the random upgrades available at each level-up. This combination keeps the gameplay semi-unpredictable, though you can influence the odds of your favorite power-ups appearing in the hub.

As you can see in the screens and trailer for our Entropy Survivors review, the game’s presentation is vibrant, with colorful environments that enhance the action. The background soundtrack complements the gameplay. Additionally, the game features seasonal content based on the current date, adding a dynamic and festive element that keeps the experience fresh.

Entropy Survivors offers a total of 26 trophies, including 8 Bronze trophies, 12 Silver trophies, and 6 Gold trophies. And yes, that does mean the game has a full trophy list with a shiny Platinum. The trophies are awarded for completing all the game’s worlds, conquering missions on higher difficulty levels, unlocking every character class and weapon, finding and equipping every ability, fully enhancing a piece of equipment, and playing with another player. Are you up to the challenge?

Entropy Survivors Review - 3

Entropy Survivors is an engaging arena-based roguelite bullet hell game where waves of enemies relentlessly flood the battlefield. I liked the game’s presentation and the deep customization options. Due to the time investment required to fully immerse yourself, it’s not the best fit for a quick, pick-up-and-play experience. While it wasn’t entirely my style, I can see how a dedicated community could thrive around this game, as its depth and progression would appeal to players looking for a more involved challenge. Entropy Survivors is out on PlayStation 5 with a $9.99 price tag.
