Great God Grove from LimboLane and Fellow Traveller is a charming story about the world coming to an end. LimboLane previously gave us the wacky point and click adventure Smile for Me, which I got a chance to review on PlayStation 5 last year, so I was looking forward to checking out their latest project. I had a good time with Smile for Me and loved the game’s art style and sound design, so that definitely helped when I started working on our Great God Grove review.

Why is the apocalypse now on the horizon, right around the corner? Once in each generation, all Gods come together to postpone the apocalypse… which is a good thing, since no one wants the apocalypse to end everything! Unfortunately, this time around, the God of Communication started a bunch of fights between the other Gods… and then went MIA! It’s now up to you to try and save the universe before it’s too late. You’re the Gods’ new mail carrier!
You see, it used to be that the God of Communication would use the mighty Megapon to deliver the Grove’s messages. Unfortunately, he’s now been sending cruel letters to everyone, hence why the Gods are so angry about the current situation. After the Megapon lands in front of you, you’ll now be in charge of using the power of communication to try and fix this whole thing before the universe goes kaput. You’ll be sucking up speech bubbles and firing them at others in order to communicate!

How will you be spending your time with Great God Grove? You’ll walk around each area using the left analog stick, running by pressing the Y button if needed. Aim using the right analog stick and fire by pressing the ZR button. Suck in items and speech bubbles by pressing the ZL button. You’ll then be able to select an item with the L and R buttons or by pressing up or down on the D-Pad. When playing from a first-person perspective, you’ll look around with the right analog stick and will be able to zoom in to get a better look by pressing the Y button. There’s also the option of using motion controls. That way, you could say, nod yes or no during interactions!
You’ll be using speech bubbles and other items to solve a series of puzzles that will hopefully bring you closer to stopping the apocalypse. It’s hard to talk about the puzzles without spoiling things since they’re very much a big part of the game… so I’ll only discuss the first one that you’ll run into in order to give you an idea of what to expect from Great God Grove.

As soon as you land at the Grove, you’ll have to get rid of the four anchors you sucked up at the boat that brought you there in the first place. You’ll quickly run into someone who needs you to deliver a letter that will finally let his crush know how he feels. But when you deliver the letter… she’s not happy about it! She wants to hear him SAY how he feels, not write about it. How can you help him then? Why, you could suck up the speech bubble in which he confesses his feelings for her and shoot it away! That should show her he means business. This will make her move from the bridge in which she was standing so that you can continue with your main mission.

Unfortunately, this time around, the God of Communication started a bunch of fights between the other Gods… and then went MIA! It’s now up to you to try and save the universe before it’s too late.
