Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered from NetEase Games brings us a new take on Grasshopper Manufacture’s cult classic. The game was originally released back in 2011 on PlayStation 5 by Electronic Arts. It was directed by Massimo Guarini, produced by Shinji Mikami, and written by Suda51, with music by Akira Yamaoka. The game did not sell as many copies as one would expect with such a group behind the game’s creation. It’s now 2024, and this particular project is getting a new chance thanks to the Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered from NetEase Games.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered Review - 1

Your name is Garcia Hotspur, and you’re a powerful demon hunter. Your journey will begin after an intro cutscene that sets things up. What follows will be a short tutorial segment that will teach you the basics while also letting you know what your motivation is for diving into the underworld. You find that your girlfriend is being abducted by demons. After taking care of the lesser demons that have crashed into the apartment, you end up going against Fleming, the Lord of Demons, who drags her away to the underworld, where he plans to kill Paula over and over again. You jump into the portal to chase Fleming, joined by demon sidekick Johnson, who will be of great help. Johnson is, after all, going to act as your torch, guns, and motorcycle!

The game can be played in one of three difficulty settings: Lemon Hunter, Demon Hunter, or Legion Hunter, which could be called Easy, Normal, and Hard. If you want to 100% the game, on top of getting all of the collectibles, you’ll also have to play through the game from start to finish three times since the difficulty trophies don’t stack – more on trophies in a bit. Since this is Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, that means we’re getting some new stuff, right? Along with a boost to the game’s resolution – with support up to 4K – and a framerate at 60 frames per second, we’re also getting some new content to enjoy. There are four additional costumes to choose from (Placa Garcia, Ocho Corazones, Demonio Garcia, and Kamikaze Garcia), as well as a New Game+ mode that carries over your weapons and upgrades for a new run.

You’ll control your character with the left analog stick, as you use the right analog stick to control the camera as needed. Quickly perform a 180-degree turn by pressing the X button. You can also press left or right on the left analog stick and the X button to perform a dodge roll. Dash by pressing and holding down the R2 button. You can use Johnson’s torch form to perform a melee attack by pressing the Circle button. Aim with your weapon by pressing the L2 button and shoot with the R2 button. You also have a light shot, which you can use with the R1 button. This can be used to stun enemies, attack demons that are protected by darkness, or shoot at goat heads to shine some light over an area.

Change weapons by using the D-Pad so that you can choose between a fast-shooting pistol with more ammo or, for example, a more powerful burst shotgun with a shorter range and less ammo. Reload with the Square button so that you’re not caught without any bullets at the wrong time! If you’re damaged, you can collect a nice bottle of booze. Select it with the Triangle button, and then drink your pain away by pressing the L1 button as much as possible. Be sure to collect as much booze as you can so that you can always be ready to recover after a hard fight!

As you defeat enemies, you’ll get to collect White Gems, which will act as the in-game currency for making purchases. You can spend them to get yourself some extra alcohol to heal your wounds, or you could spend them with the merchant you meet along the way. His name is Christopher, and he will gobble up any White Gems you bring him, rewarding you in return with some booze, ammo, and even Red Gems! By searching everywhere and spending wisely with Christopher, you’ll also collect Red Gems. These are special since you can use them to buy upgrades that will considerably help you. Thanks to Red Gems, you’ll be able to upgrade the damage dealt with weapons, weapon reload speed, weapon ammo capacity, fire rate and size of light shots, or boost your overall health.

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to try to add to your collection. Since this is a Cross-Buy title, you’ll be able to download both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game to your PS5 console, and each version will have its own trophy list for you to work on. Said list will be split into 42 Bronze trophies, 5 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies. What are some of the objectives you’ll have to complete for that shiny Platinum trophy? The first trophy will pop as soon as you start to play. The next one pops up when you complete the intro act in the game. From there, there’s a good chunk of trophies tied to progressing through the game and completing each chapter in the game, beating the game in each of the three difficulty settings, defeating 20 enemies with the Teether, defeating 30 enemies with the Skullcussioner, defeating 40 enemies with the Skullfest 9000, saving more than 300 White Gems in your inventory, and collecting all Red Gems in the game. Since the trophy list for this new PlayStation 5 remaster is the same as that one for the PlayStation 3 version, you can use this Shadows of the Damned Trophy Guide to help you.
