The Smurfs – Dreams from Ocellus Services and Microids brings us a colorful 3D platforming adventure on PlayStation 5. This indie dev and publisher combo previously gave us the fun 2D platformer Marsupilami: Hoobadventure – which I had a chance to review on Nintendo Switch – so I was very much looking forward to checking out this 3D adventure with everyone’s favorite blue creatures. For this new game, the evil Gargamel has devised a new scheme to catch the Smurfs! After casting a curse on the sarsaparilla bushes – which happen to be the Smurfs’ favorite snack – a deep slumber envelops the Smurfs that eat them.

It’s a fun game that can be played on your own or in local co-op as you embark on a dreamlike quest to try and awaken all of the Smurfs before Gargamel manages to reach the village! Since you’ll be taking on a dream world, this has given the developers a chance to take on some more wacky concepts while creating each of the game’s many stages. Just be careful to stay away from any potential nightmares! As you run and jump through each level, you’ll have to solve some puzzles here and there as you collect Magic Orbs and patterns to customize your Smurf and make it your own. As you can tell from the trailer and screens in this The Smurfs – Dreams review, the game has a bit of a Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario Galaxy vibe going on.
Once you dive in, you’ll take control of your Smurf by using the left analog stick, running by pressing and holding down the Square button, and jumping with the X button. You can also float for a bit by pressing the X button after jumping, which will help you clear some longer gaps. Press the Square button while jumping to encase your Smurf in a bubble suspended up in the air. This will be important for some of the platforming segments. Catch and throw items by using the R1 and R2 buttons. This can also be used to interact with some items so that you can progress further in a stage. You can also press and hold down these buttons in order to shake gadgets. You should also greet your fellow Smurfs by using the L1 and L2 buttons as needed. Who knows, they might thank you by offering a reward!

Your journey will begin at the Smurf’s Village, where Papa Smurf will fill you in on what is going on. When you’re ready to start your new adventure, just jump onto the giant pillow at the back of the area. Sure, you could spend some time running around the village, but that’s not going to save any of the Smurfs who have entered into the dream world! After landing on the Astral Map, you’ll be able to fly through space as you approach each of the different constellations that represent the different levels where you’ll be able to save the Smurfs who have fallen asleep from the curse. First up: Chef Smurf!
The sarsaparilla that you collect on each level will be added to your total tally, with bunches giving you more sarsaparilla than single ones. This will act as the in-game currency, which you can spend in order to unlock additional skins for customizing your Smurf. If you want to 100% the game, then you’ll also have to keep an eye out for the special yarn bobbins and astral mushrooms that are hidden in each level. And yes, collecting all of these will certainly reward you with some trophies!

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on adding to your collection. And since it’s a Cross-Buy title, you’ll be able to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own trophy list for you to work on. Said trophy list will be split into 3 Bronze trophies, 11 Silver trophies, and 7 Gold trophies. The objectives to complete include completing Chef’s Dream, Smurfette’s Dream, and Vanity Smurf’s Dream, collecting all astral mushrooms, finding all yarn bobbins, accessing a secret area, defeating a boss without respawning, as well as some miscellaneous additional objectives that I won’t be spoiling here.
