The Coma 2B: Catacomb from Headup Games and Dvora Studio is the latest entry in the 2D horror series now on Nintendo Switch. It’s a game that serves as a bridge between the original The Coma – which we reviewed in its The Coma: Recut version on PlayStation 4 – and the sequel The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters – which, again, we also reviewed on Sony’s last-gen console. After the series’ protagonist Youngho escapes from the titular mirror dimension known as The Coma and manages to return to a more normal life, finally being able to spend time with his friends at school. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned, and Youngho realizes he must go back into The Coma, jumping back and forth between the real world and the mirror world… even if what seems to be real hides a dark secret.

Youngho must search for any clues at the weird facility beneath Dokaebi Market that can lead him to find a powerful relic sword that can be used against the Vicious Sister. As he searches for the pages from Yaesol’s notes, everything turns for the worse. This Korean horror game knows how to increase your heart rate with a tense setting in which death lurks around every corner. As you can see from the trailer and screens in this The Coma 2B: Catacomb review, the game uses hand-drawn art for its presentation and for the story cutscenes, which helps it stand out on Nintendo’s console.
Things will start slowly, with Youngho having to take a series of tests at school along with all of his classmates. You’ll get to meet the other main characters who will be joining you for this supernatural horror experience and will even get a chance to better understand how Youngho feels about them… especially the girls! Maybe there’s a chance for romance to bloom in such harsh times! Unfortunately, you’ll soon realize that something is terribly wrong. Your classmates start to act up, and the school slowly changes into a more.. decrepit location. You’re now in an endless loop and must find a way to break free before you’re killed!

As you begin your new adventure, you’ll take control of Youngho with the left analog stick as you walk through each location. You can run by pressing and holding down the B button. Do know that this will drain your stamina, and if it runs out, you won’t be able to run for a bit. While your instinct would be always to run so that you can quickly get in and out of each area, doing so will make it easier for you to be found. You can interact with your surroundings by pressing the A button. Check your map by pressing up on the D-Pad.
You’ll be able to press the Y button to have Youngho perform a roll. This can be used to quickly avoid most hazards. Sure, you have a flashlight – which you can activate with the ZR button – to shed some light that can hopefully cut through the darkness, but the flashlight can also give away your position. You can press the L button to check your to-do-list, so that you can review the objectives that you’ll be working on. The items that you collect will be added to your inventory, and you can check these items by pressing down on the D-Pad. You have four slots for items, and you can switch between them with the right analog stick and use them with the X button You only have four slots for this. The good news is that key items don’t have a capacity limit.

There’s a Bonus section in which you’ll be working on unlocking additional art by progressing through the game. You’ll be given a freebie as soon as you start the game – an image showing an empty classroom – and will then need to open the extra images by completing some specific objectives. Think of it as an in-game achievement system in which you’ll be rewarded with cool images for your efforts. If you’re the type of gamer who likes to 100% games, then you’ll have to complete all 25 objectives to uncover all available images.
