Necro Story from Rablo Games is a chill creature-collecting RPG on Nintendo Switch. This indie previously gave us comedy RPG Healer’s Quest on Nintendo’s console, so I was looking forward to checking out what this new adventure was all about. You’ll be taking on the role of a powerful necromancer who will be helped by the ghost of a white mage. Your goal? To sneak into the Underworld… to save humanity! With such a tall order, you’ll have to give it your all as you use a variety of spells to channel your power as you capture your enemies’ souls in order to have them fight by your side.
Before you start your new adventure, you’ll get to customize your character. First up will be choosing its gender, name, and karma. Next up, we will choose its hair, nose, hat, skin, earring, facial hair, hair color, and skin color. You can also pick a combination for its belt, shoulder, and robe. Oh, and you’ll also have to pick your necromancer’s clothing color. The last step will be to choose the necromancer’s school of magic in which it specializes, which will make spells from that particular school more effective. There’s the Affliction school of magic, which revolves around dealing damage over time by using poison, crowd control, and curses. Darkness magic revolves around using powerful direct damage spells, with some spells being so powerful they have a shot at defeating some non-boss enemies in a single hit.

Another school of magic is Summoning. If you go with Summoning, then you’ll get a chance to do what necromancers are known to do best: summon undead creatures to fight for you! Going with this school of magic will make the creatures you summon have more resistance and deal more damage. Next up is the Life Steal school of magic. As its name suggests, going with this particular school of magic will allow you to use spells that will suck the life out of your opponents in order to give it to yourself or your team. If you decide to go with this one, then all of your spells from this school of magic will restore more health. You could also choose the Dark Pacts school of magic, which will give you access to the power of ancient demons thanks to a special pact. This is the more challenging of all available schools of magic, and it’s definitely not suitable for those of you who are just getting to know what Necro Story has to offer.
The game can be played in one of five different difficulty settings, with four available right away and the last one needing to be unlocked: Story, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Apocalypse. Story is for those of you who are interested in focusing on the game’s story, with combat being merely a formality. Easy presents itself as a step up from Story, with easy-to-win battles. Normal offers a moderate challenge, making it the difficulty setting for most gamers out there. If you go with the Hard difficulty setting, then you’ll need to make every choice you make count since you can end up down for the count if you don’t pay attention. There are also options for playing in Hardcore and Ultra Hardcore. Hardcore makes it so that when an allied mob dies, you must catch their soul, or they will be gone for good. If you activate Ultra Hardcore, then when a mob dies, it will be gone for good. On top of that, if the necromancer or Vivi dies, then you get a permanent game over.
When in combat, you’ll use the left analog stick to aim at the enemy you want to target as you switch between your available spells by using the L and R buttons. Press the A button to cast a spell. Since they will have a cooldown, you should cycle between all of your spells so that you can always try to have an action in play. You can also press the X button to perform a melee attack. This will deal physical damage and won’t consume any of your MP, but it will leave you without access to any of your spells for a bit.

Once you defeat an enemy, their soul will try to reach the Underworld. You’ll need to act fast in order to absorb it before it’s too late! For this, you’ll use the left analog stick to point at the soul and press the ZL button to absorb it. By absorbing a soul, you’ll obtain bonus experience points, mana, and Animae. When the soul vessel is full, you’ll be able to send a new soul into it to capture its full essence. Once you do that and the current fight is over, you’ll be able to add it to your team to fight by your side.
Once you’ve obtained enough experience points, a character will be able to level up your character. When this happens, its HP and MP will be boosted. If the one that levels up is the necromancer, then you’ll be provided with some points to allocate to boost your strength, endurance, magic, and willpower. Increase your strength to deal more damage. Boost endurance to increase your HP total. Boost magic to increase the power of your spells. Boost MP to increase your max MP. While you can avoid some fights, you might want to take on as many as possible early in the game so that you can gain an extra level or two in order to have an easier time ahead.

As you explore each area, you might be able to find some items that can help your cause. Just open up your inventory by pressing the – button to check them out! You can find staffs, trinkets, or gems. Staffs are items that can only be used by the necromancer. Trinkets will provide extra power to your characters and can be used by everyone but the necromancer. Each character will be able to equip up to two trinkets. Equip a pretty bandana to raise awareness by two points. A Water Amulet can be equipped to add a 50% boost to ice resistance. And if you equip a Last Chance Ring, that character will receive a +5 boost to endurance and a regen effect of 2 HP per second!
