Melobot – A Last Song from Microids and Anomalie Studio is a cozy adventure in which music will play a key role as you work on saving the corrupted flora around you. You’ll be taking on the role of the titular Melobot, a musical robot that has been created in order to preserve harmony in a world that humans have unfortunately made much, much worse. Humans created a series of machines to extract dark matter from plants since it made for a powerful source of energy. What could possibly go wrong with this? When the dark energy starts to affect plants and the environment, humans decide they must stop harvesting dark energy before it’s too late. Machines did not take kindly to humans trying to stop them and ended up rebelling! The good news is that you can heal each Meloplant you find thanks to the power of music.

Each Meloplant type will be healed by the same tune, so you’ll be able to quickly pick up the pace. You can play through Melobot: A Last Song in one of two difficulty settings: Easy or Hard. If you go with the Easy option, you’ll be able to see the input corresponding to each note so that you can play along to each melody after listening to it once. This will allow you to focus on the journey. If you decide to go with the Hard difficulty option, you won’t be able to see the input corresponding to each note, so you’ll need to pay close attention to each note so that you can recognize them by ear. This is the way the developers intended you to play the game, but it’s always good to have options!

The controls for the game are very simple. You’ll control your character with the left analog stick. The R1 button will be used to interact with Meloplants and to scan Remains. You must heal Meloplants with the power of music by playing their melody. To play notes, you’ll have to press the Square, Triangle, Circle, or X buttons, as well as pressing left, up, right, or down on the D-Pad. You can also use the right analog stick to produce a note by pressing in on it. Press in on the left analog stick to open your menu, from which you can check your missions, view the Melodex for plants, analyze the data you’ve collected, or check out the map for the area you’re exploring.

Your Melobot will be able to sprint for a bit by pressing the L2 button for as long as you have energy for it. This will be useful for dodging hazards. By pressing the X and Square buttons at the same time, you’ll be able to create a shockwave that can be used to destroy generators that will form barriers keeping you away from some Meloplants, or that will be blocking your path. Be careful because barriers can damage Melobot! This shockwave will also be used to attack enemies as needed. You can also heal your wounds by pressing and holding down the Circle and Triangle buttons to recover some of your lost health.

As you progress through the game, you’ll be rewarded with points that you can spend to upgrade the Melobot. You could choose to boost the Melobot’s health, increase its shield, add an emergency shield, improve how much energy you can use to sprint before overheating while increasing the overheat cooldown, increase the speed for sprinting when you’ve spent half of your energy on it, reduce the charge time for the healing ability, increase the rate of healing, or boost the shockwave’s damage. You can also reset upgrades by pressing the Square button if you want to change how you distribute points.
