Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game from Illfonic brings us a 3v7, asymmetric horror multiplayer experience on PlayStation 5. The studio previously gave us asymmetric horror multiplayer release Friday the 13th: The Game back in 2017 and slime-filled Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed in 2022. It’s now 2024 and with Friday the 13th: The Game now being delisted – because that’s how licensing works – it was time for the studio to give us a new horror game to take for a spin online on PlayStation 5.

As the name suggests, Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game is based on the cult classic horror movie from 1988 in which, well, Killer Klowns from outer space invade! This gem from the Chiodo Brothers – who also worked on Critters, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, The Simpsons, and Turbo: a Power Rangers Movie, to name some examples – has the evil aliens taking on the small town of Crescent Cove as they set out to abduct, encase, and harvest all humans for sustenance. They use weird contraptions you’d see clowns use at a circus to get the job done. How does this translate to the game?

The 3v7 scenario means there will be two teams during each 15-minute match. One will have 3 powerful Klowns on it, and the other one will have 7 weaker humans. If you go with the Klowns, you’ll be working on triggering the Klownpocalypse by trapping and harvesting humans, you can use them as an energy source. Just be sure to turn them into a cotton candy cocoon and patch it up to the Lackey Generator. Or just kill the humans. Whichever makes you happier. You can find loose cocoons on each map, which you can hook to the Lackey Generator. The sooner you do this, the more lackeys you’ll be able to send into action. And if you manage to fully upgrade all 4 generators, you’ll trigger an early Klownpocalypse! If the match timer expires, the Klownpocalypse will begin, forcing humans to escape before the explosion engulfs them.

Klowns certainly have the advantage here, which is why there will only be three of them on the map vs. the group of 7 humans. Klowns are, therefore, made to move slower since having fast-moving Klowns would be overkill. Paying attention to any noises the pesky humans make will be a must because these will lead you right to them so that you can work your magic! Sticking near escape routes is a good strategy since a human or two will probably drop by as they try to remain alive long enough to slip right by you. But what if you covered them with cotton candy? That would certainly make it harder for a human to vanish right before your eyes! Oh, and Klowns can use large jumps to quickly move around the map as long as the cotton candy Fog of War has been removed for that spot.

If you’re playing as one of the humans, then you’ll need to work on a way to escape, either by yourself or by helping each other to survive for long enough to make a group escape viable. You can locate two spark plugs to activate the Klown Portal to get out of the area. You can find gas to power the generator and a keycard to open the Klownpocalypse bunker. Another option is breaking the barrier blocking a door at the edge of the area and finding the key that opens it. Your last option as a human is to repair the damaged boat. Fill up its gas tank, install the missing sparkplug, and drive it away before one of the clowns gets you!

You have limited inventory space, so you’ll need to make sure that you have the right items to survive at any given time. Search any container you find to see if you can locate something that is useful. As a heads-up, if you ever find a compass during a match, you’ll definitely want to hold on to it. Why? Because when you use it, you’ll be able to see where all potential escape routes are located, as well as where you can find, say, a gas can! Heal your wounds if you find an item that can help you recover some of your health because you won’t make it if you’re limping toward an exit. Locate the escape items needed to activate the aforementioned potential escape routes. And if you see a Klown… RUN!

Do remember that you won’t be able to run forever since you’ll have a stamina bar to keep an eye on. Rest when it’s safe to catch your breath, and maybe partake in an energy drink for that extra boost needed to rush toward a hiding spot. When all of your plans fail, don’t forget that you still have one last shot at escaping. During the last 30 seconds of the Klownpocalypse countdown, the Terezi Brothers will burst into action with their ice cream ban, destroying one of the exterior gum walls, giving your group one last shot at making it out alive before the blast radius from the Klownpocalypse envelops you. But… what happens if you end up dying during a match?

Worry not, because you’ll still be able to work on helping your fellow humans from the afterlife! You can play a series of spectator mini-games while you wait to hopefully be resurrected, thanks to the handy resurrection machine. This machine can only be activated once per match, so it might be best if you wait until a good chunk of humans are dead. The mini-games will give you a chance to earn items that you can then decide to gift to the fellow humans that are still alive and semi-well. Or maybe you want to keep it for yourself so that you can be ready to put it to good use if you’re resurrected. If you do manage to escape, you can still play the spectator mini-games and then gift any items that you win. And before I forget, aim for the nose! Hitting a Klown’s nose by throwing an object or shooting it with a firearm will deal considerable damage while also stunning that Klown for much longer.

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you. The list is split into 39 Bronze trophies, 6 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies for you to work on. There are many objectives to complete, separated for Klowns and humans. The first trophy you’ll get will be for playing your first match. Along with that, you could end up with an extra 2-3 trophies popping up after your first match, depending on your performance, your group’s performance, and if you’re in the Klowns or humans group.

Some of these objectives include winning 10 matches as a human, defeating 30 lackeys, killing a clown with a shotgun, finding your first lore tape, escaping the map with the help of the Terenzi Brothers, freeing another human from a cocoon hooked to a Lackey Generator, escaping with another human on the boat, or being the last human alive and triggering the resurrection machine. As for the Klowns side of the list, you must equip an unlocked cosmetic to your Klown, reach level 50, trigger the Klownpocalypse early, kill 100 humans, hook up 20 cocoons to Lackey Generators, get a Perfect Klown victory, and be the first Klown to hook up a cocoon to a Lackey Generator.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game offers a 3v7, asymmetric horror multiplayer experience. Based on the classic cult movie, you will instantly be captivated by the Klown designs as soon as you boot up the game. Seeing the Klowns just shoot at humans and turn them into cocoons will certainly bring back some memories. Due to its online multiplayer nature, this one is not going to be for everyone, but fans of these types of games – here’s looking at you, Texas Chainsaw Massacre – should definitely give this one a go. Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game is out on PlayStation 5 with a $39.99 price tag. There’s also the Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game Deluxe Edition for $59.99, which, along with the base game, includes the following:

2 Human Characters(Mike & Debbie)
2 Klown Skins (Junksuit 2/5 & 3/5)
1 Movie Klown Skin (Bibbo)
