The Kindeman Remedy is a new gruesome experience from Troglobyte Games and 3D Realms worth checking out on PlayStation 5. I had a lot of fun with horror cooking sim Ravenous Devils for our review, so I was definitely intrigued about this new release. In The Kindeman Remedy, you’ll be taking on the role of the titular Doctor Carl Zachary Kindeman, an individual who is certainly now finding himself at his lowest of lows. He’s been scorned by the medical community due to his… peculiar methods. With nowhere else to turn to, he ends up taking a lousy job at an appalling prison… and that’s when things start to look up for him.

Why? Because it’s in this dingy location that he’ll be able to show all of the doubters that his methods work. You know, because no one is going to notice his experiments. You’ll be able to decide the fate of all inmates, for better or worse. You can literally do nothing and just watch them die from, say, being electrocuted in the chair. Or you could get your hands dirty and start to find a way to improve your life at the expense of your neverending supply of guinea pigs. Dr. Kindeman has had enough of stitching minor wounds and setting bones. He’s now ready to prove his worth to the world.

The Kindeman Remedy Review - 1

The last game was about making the most of unsuspecting customers, cutting and grinding every last part to cook some delicious dishes that would help to keep the lights on while working on sourcing new raw materials, thanks to the tailor shop on the upper floor. This new one will have you using the vast knowledge of Dr. Kindeman – anesthesiologist, surgeon, AND chemist – to synthesize drugs that can forever change the face of medicine. He’ll be joined by Sister Anna, who sees the Doctor’s actions – and her own – as a way of delivering justice and peace to those who have been locked away. After all, their souls are too corrupt, and they must be brought before the Lord!

Your journey will begin in a laboratory that is currently undergoing some… renovations. This is the game’s way of going about introducing new elements at a steady pace so as not to overwhelm players. At least it’s large, practical, and isolated from the rest of the prison. No one will hear your test subjects scream! You can play through the Story Campaign to learn all the basics and get to know the different characters you’ll interact with, or you can go into the endless Mode to try and put everything you’ve learned to the test as you try to keep the cycle going for as long as possible.

The gameplay loop will go as follows: you’ll have to keep appearances and make it seem like you’re not doing anything wrong so that you can keep your Reputation high. This will, in turn, allow you to receive the funding needed for you to work on your experiments on the side. Funding is necessary if you want to get the equipment required to further your research at a steady pace. A good Reputation is also needed for the Warden to allow you to expand your operation to new rooms so that you can speed things up. You’ll begin your first day by preparing the pills that Sister Anna will distribute among the prisoners.

To do this, you’ll first need to retrieve a pill capsule. Once that’s been taken care of, you’ll have to decide what to fill it up with. Go to the Chemical Desk and mix ingredients. But wait! Aren’t you forgetting a step? Before you can mix the ingredients, you’ll need to select a component for the pill! Once you have prepared a pill, place it in the freight lifter so that Sister Anna can retrieve it. It’s then that Sister Anna gets a bit carried away. After obtaining the pill, she can add some poison to the mix before giving the pill to an inmate. Why would she do this? Well, the good Doctor will need to see all the potential effects the pills and other meds have on test subjects, right?

Those that die will be dropped at the morgue by the guards. You’ll have to juggle making pills with visiting the morgue so that you can recover the body of the newly departed, as well as visit the check-up room before the guards bring an inmate for you to review. Oh, and in this prison, there’s one execution every two days. But what if Dr. Kindeman injected the inmate with a reactant to help him survive the execution? Then he’d have a live specimen to experiment with! Just be sure to call Ronnie before the execution so that he can rig the whole thing, or else you’ll waste a perfectly fine reactant!

Grab yourself a corpse and extract all of the wonderful compounds it contains – all thanks to the wonderful procedures of Dr. Kindeman. After examining the body, you’ll be done with it and must dispose of the evidence. Corpses yield Minor Research Reports, which are useful. Live specimens will yield Major Research Reports. All Reports are good since they will bring you one step closer to your goal: finding the Remedy!

By improving your Reputation, you’ll be able to purchase upgrades at the end of each day. Buying upgrades is a must if you want to discover the Remedy! You can add a torture chair, an acid bath, or a torture rack to your handy torture chamber. You can also upgrade the lab by increasing the chem desk speed, placing additional chem desks, increasing the number of items produced, or adding a new component. For the morgue, you’ll get to add more tables and improve the reaction’s speed. Or would you like to add an extra table to the operating room?

Trophy-wise, this one has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy waiting for you. The list is split into 6 Bronze trophies, 9 Silver trophies, and 7 Gold trophies. The objectives you’ll have to work on include unlocking all upgrades in a single playthrough, using all special treatments, serving 50 pills in one playthrough, administering 20 drips in one playthrough, not poisoning any inmates for a whole day, freeing an inmate, completing the game with different completion percentages, or getting a game over in the Endless Mode. It won’t be a simple process, so you must learn from your mistakes and adjust as needed.

The Kindeman Remedy is a gruesome experience worth checking out. If you played Ravenous Devils, then you have a good idea of what to expect from this one. As the delusional Dr. Kindeman, you’ll do whatever it takes and test your theories on as many subjects as possible to be able to find the Remedy, a powerful drug that can finally show the entire medical community it’s wrong about discarding your knowledge. The Kindeman Remedy is out on PlayStation 5 with a $7.99 price tag. There’s also a PlayStation 4 version available as a separate purchase for the same price.
