Hidden gem classic El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster from crim is ready to go on Switch. El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron was originally released worldwide by Ignition on PlayStation 3 back in 2011. It’s now 2024, and we’re getting a full HD remaster with some quality-of-life improvements on Nintendo Switch. Former Ignition staff member Kazuhiro Takeshita wanted to preserve the game and keep the IP going after the closure of Ignition Tokyo, which is why crim bought the rights to El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron in 2013. After a port to Steam in 2021, it’s now the turn of Nintendo’s hybrid console to take this game for a spin. It’s a game that reminded me at times of the Devil May Cry and Bayonetta series, which is not a bad thing!

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster Review - 1

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is a journey based on the apocryphal Book of Enoch. Semyaza, a former member of the Council of Heaven, decided to casually steal some of Gos’s wisdom. After descending to Earth alongside the Grigori – Arakiel, Armaros, Azazel, Baraquel, and Sasiel – they accelerate human evolution. Because of this, a new group, new human-Grigori hybrids, known as Nephilim, are born. Unfortunately, the Nephilim are up to no good and, if not stopped, will destroy the planet. God then sends Enoch to Earth to put a stop to all of this before the Council of Heaven decides to act and wipe out all life. Oh, and you’ll be joined by Lucifel. While the game autosaves, it wouldn’t hurt to also save your progress with Lucifel.

Once you dive into the action, you’ll control your character with the left analog stick, jumping and double jumping with the A or B buttons and attacking with the Y or X buttons as needed. You can guard against incoming attacks by pressing the R button. As you attack enemies, your weapon will get dirty from their vile nature. You can purify it by pressing the L button to boost its effectiveness. Special moves are activated by pressing the R button and the A or B buttons, and special attacks are used by pressing the R button and the Y or X buttons.

You can use the Arch weapon to glide for a bit by pressing and holding down the A or B buttons while in mid-air. This can be used to make some of the trickier platforming sections a bit easier. If you find yourself sans a weapon, attack an enemy to weaken them and use purification to grab hold of their weapon. Once they’re dazed, press the L button. Overboost is triggered by pressing the L and R buttons once you have enough energy stored after collecting enough Flame of Power. Do know this ability will be unlocked later in the game. When you do this, your attacks will become more powerful, and your armor will be restored. When defeated in combat, quickly mash the A, B, X, Y, L, and R buttons for a chance to recover.

The Arch will be the first weapon you’ll gain access to during your time with El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron HD Remaster. You’ll later get your hands on the Gale, which can be used to attack from a longer range. The third weapon option is the Veil, a slower but more powerful weapon that also grants you some extra protection. Weapons perform based on a weapon triangle. The Arch is strong against the Veil but weak against the Gale. The Veil is strong against the Gale but weak against the Arch. The Gale is strong against the Arch but weak against the Veil.

Since there are no HUD elements in the game, you will need to pay attention to how Enoch looks to get an idea of how much damage he’s sustained. He can be fully clad in armor, which represents he’s at full health. The more damage he receives, the more pieces he’ll start to lose. You can recover your armor plating by collecting the Light of Blessing. The Light of Blessing is available in small, medium, or large sizes. There’s the option of adding gauges to the game as HUD elements if you want to, for a more traditional experience.

Along with, as this release’s name suggests, the full HD remaster for El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, this Nintendo Switch release has also been optimized for a framerate boost to 60 FPS for a much smoother experience. As a bonus, we’re also getting digital versions of the post-ending novel Lucifer’s Fall Chronicles of Ceta, as well as of the El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron artbook. Yes, they do contain spoilers. No, you won’t be able to check them out until you’ve cleared the game. You can also decide if you want to play in HiRes Mode with a focus on the visuals or in Action Mode, thus focusing on the framerate for smoother action segments.
