Duck Detective: The Secret Salami from Happy Broccoli Games is a fun, bite-sized, cozy mystery game on Nintendo Switch. You’ll be playing as a freshly divorced duck struggling to make ends meet: the titular Duck Detective! Your task will be to solve the mysteries in your future – and of your past – as you use the mighty power of Deducktions. Yes, that’s the game’s way of setting the tone for this one. It’s a quirky game that is aided by being a fully voice-acted adventure, which was not something I had expected!

Duck Detective: The Secret Salami Review - 1

Deducktions are a key part of the gameplay loop. You’ll need to find clue words by questioning other people and paying close attention to your surroundings. You’ll then use what you’ve learned to enter clue words into the blank spaces to solve Deducktions and carry onward. All you’ll have to aid you as you begin this journey will be your wits and the last bit of your money. You’re so broke that said last money is not even enough to cover a return bus trip!

The game will show you the basics by having you retrace your steps for the previous night. You’ll move around your office by using the left analog stick and will interact by pressing the A button. You’ll check your old badge, a loaf of bread that Duck Detective used as a pillow, a photo of his Ana – that would be his ex – the divorce papers for, you know, the whole divorce thing, as well as a 2nd overdue notice because of the lack of proper payment for what is owed. This will allow you to find out that the Duck Detective spent his money on bread for… the Duck Detective!

After taking care of that, the phone will ring. It seems you have a new case to solve, which is very important since you’re out of money and down on your luck. You arrive at the BearBus office, which is some type of run-down call center. Since you can’t enter right away because you don’t work at BearBus and you didn’t catch the name of whoever it is that hired you, you’ll need to inspect the area by approaching points of interest and pressing the Y button. Doing this will allow you to use a magnifying glass to find any clues that could help you find the solution to your predicament.

There’s also an in-game achievement system for you to work on as you play through Duck Detective if you want to 100% the game. What are the objectives to complete on said achievements list? The objectives include solving a Deducktion, solving five Deducktions, solving ten Deducktions, completing all inspections, filling out all suspects’ names, kicking over all of the bins at the BearBus office, and solving the titular mystery of the Secret Salami. Pay attention, work hard, and give it your all so that you can be the best Duck Detective ever!
