[PS4Blog.net Interview] Weird Penguin Games On Empires Shall Fall

by EdEN, Owner

We’ll be working on a review for Empires Shall Fall, so I got in touch with Weird Penguin Games to talk a bit about the game and its development. Come check it out!

PS4Blog: Welcome! Thank you for joining us this morning. Could you please help us get started by telling our readers a bit about yourself and your work?

Thanks for having me! My name is Fimor and I have a passion for creating games. By day, I work as a front-end developer, but in my free time, I delve into game development.

In February me and my team released our first game on Steam and Nintendo Switch – Empires Shall Fall. It’s a turn-based strategy game in a dieselpunk style highly inspired by Advance Wars and brings fresh ideas to an old formula. Our team consists of an artist, a musician, and myself as the programmer.

PS4B: How would you describe the game to someone new to it?

Imagine a chess-like experience set on a grid-based map. You control three types of units – infantry, vehicles, and aircraft – each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Your goal is to produce new units, capture buildings – whether enemy or neutral – and strategically maneuver across the terrain. While easy to pick up, mastering the game requires time.

PS4B: How long did it take to develop Empires Shall Fall? Did you run into any hurdles or challenges along the way?

Empires Shall Fall is a hobby project, so development went slow, and it took 4 years to complete. The most challenging aspect was programming the AI. It took a lot of time to make it well-balanced and optimized. The final result isn’t perfect, but I’m proud of it.

PS4B: Are you considering working on any additional DLC to expand on the game, or are you aiming to work on a new project?

There will be an update with new languages, maps, and bug fixes at the end of April. However, I won’t be creating additional DLC for Empires Shall Fall. I’ve started to work on a new project in a solo. It’s not related to Empires Shall Fall because, after 4 years of development, I’m a bit exhausted from turn-based games. I’ll continue supporting Empires Shall Fall with new skirmish maps and bug fixing if players report them to me.

PS4B: And now it’s time for us to go. Would you like to add anything else?

Thank you so much! I’d like to express my hope that gamers will enjoy Empires Shall Fall as I enjoyed the development. Until next time, happy gaming!
