[PS4Blog.net Interview] Mango Protocol On CLeM

We’ll be working on a review for CLeM on Nintendo Switch, so I got in touch with Mango Protocol to talk a bit about the game and its development. Come check it out!

PS4Blog: Good morning! Thank you for joining us. Could you please help us get started by telling our readers a bit about yourself and your work?

Hi! I’m Jordi Garcia. I am Mango Protocol’s co-founder, and my main role is game designer. I have also been in charge of the animations and VFX for CLeM under Mariona’s direction. As you can see, we’re a tiny studio, so all of us have to cover many different bases.

PS4B: CLeM is now ready to go on Nintendo Switch. How would you describe the game to someone who’s new to it?

CLeM is a narrative-driven puzzlevania adventure. It is designed to be a chill-paced experience in which you roam around an apparently empty house. You will have to navigate its mysteries using magic toys and the alchemy and entomology knowledge found inside your companion notebook. CLeM features a mood that mixes cuteness with an eerie atmosphere. You will have to explore many rich environments while following a guiding voice that speaks inside your head. As you progress, you will acquire a collection of magic toys that will grant you new abilities to tackle puzzles that looked impossible and will help you reach new parts of the house that were inaccessible before.

PS4B: How long did it take to develop CLeM? Did you run into any hurdles or challenges along the way?

We have been crafting CLeM for about three years. One of the most challenging parts of the production has been designing the puzzles that you can find around the house. It is hard to come up with ideas that fit inside a room context and, at the same time, share a connection with the story development. We needed a lot of back and forth between game design and narrative direction to achieve a satisfying outcome.
Another challenging task was creating the voice system and recording the voices that you’ll be hearing inside your head through the gameplay. All the recordings were done by us inside a homemade improvised studio, and then the voices were put in a system created in Unity to simulate voices speaking to you inside your head and coming from different directions.

PS4B: Now that CLeM is out, is the team currently focusing on a PlayStation port for this dark adventure?

Sure! The PlayStation port is being completed as we speak and will shortly be available for all the PlayStation owners to enjoy. Mango Protocol is always committed to bringing the Psychotic Adventures to as many platforms as possible so everyone can enjoy them, and, of course, PlayStation is one of our main targets.

PS4B: Colossus Down previously got a physical release, so I was wondering if this is something you’re also considering for CLeM. Having an art book and soundtrack CD to go along with the physical cartridge would be cool!

Yes! We at Mango Protocol are huge fans of physical and collector’s editions. We’d be more than happy to, once again, find a suitable partner to make a physical edition of CLeM. We can’t promise anything at this moment, but rest assured that we will try our best to make this happen.
