Jagged Alliance 3 from Haemimont Games and THQ Nordic is ready to challenge you every step of the way. This is the latest tactical RPG in the long-running series that got its start back in 1994. I got to review Jagged Alliance: Rage on PlayStation 4 a handful of years ago, so I was looking forward to checking out what the first main series sequel in a while would bring to the table. Jagged Alliance: Rage was set 20 years after the first game in the franchise.

Jagged Alliance 3 takes place in the fictional country of Grand Chein. The President has been abducted by a group known as Legion, who is being led by an individual who refers to himself as the Major. You’re called into action by the President’s daughter, Emma Lafontaine, who tasks you with rescuing her father before it’s too late. You’ll have to hire a group of mercs with a variety of skills so that you can be ready for whatever the game throws at you.

Jagged Alliance 3 is a challenging journey by design, which is why the game offers you different options to tailor your experience. Right away, the game lets you know that since wounds heal slowly, money is tight, and you’ll need to invest a lot of time into repairing equipment. Because of this, you can activate what Jagged Alliance 3 calls Forgiving Mode. With Forgiving Mode, you’ll be able to have a more relaxed time, as you’ll be able to recover from your mistakes without suffering that much.

Next up, we will be choosing the game’s difficulty setting. You can go with First Blood, which is the standard difficulty setting that will be a good challenge for you to take on. There’s also the possibility of going with the Commando difficulty option, which is recommended for veterans of the series since all enemies are out to get you, and money and loot are not going to be plentiful. The last one is Mission Impossible, which, as the name suggests, will dial things up to 11, with elite enemies that will destroy you on sight.

Along with Forgiving Mode, there are some additional options for customizing your time with Jagged Alliance 3. You can decide to use Active Pause, which will allow you to pause the action when in Exploration Mode. Next up is Dead is Dead. This particular option will activate autosaves so that every move you make, every choice you take, and every death in your squad is permanent. If you activate To the Bitter End, then saving during combat will be forbidden. The last option is Lethal Weapons, which means that whenever a merc’s HP reaches 0, it will not be downed… it will be dead for good.

By taking on this new job, you’ll need to use the money that has been wired to you so that you can check out who you can hire from the Association of International Mercenaries – that would be A.I.M. – website on the dark web. To get things rolling, the game suggests that you start by hiring at least three mercenaries for your cause. You should check out each mercenary’s stat values, perks, equipment, and backpack content so that you can assemble the right team for the job.

Take, for example, Cynthia “Fox” Guzman. She’s a doctor who has some meds you can use to treat wounds, refill med kits, and first aid kits. She also has a handy first aid kit that can restore lost HP and stabilize a character that is dying. As for her perks, she has: Striking Looks, which makes enemies in combat become surprised instead of aware when noticing her, giving her an extra turn to take cover or move in for the kill; Scoundrel, which makes the first weapon swap for the turn free; or Ambidextrous, which lowers any accuracy penalty when dual-wielding firearms.

After starting a mission, you’ll be in Exploration Mode, which will allow you to survey the area and move each of your characters individually or as a team. You can then enter Comba Mode when you run into a hostile, either on its own or with a group. Do know that if you attack an enemy with a firearm, odds are that other enemies will hear you, will immediately move to the area from which the gunshot was initiated, and will join the battle.

During Combat Mode, each of your characters will have Action Points (AP), which you can spend to have them move around each location, attack an enemy, swap weapons, reload, or enter Overwatch Mode. That last one is very important. While in Overwatch Mode, a character will keep an eye out for any enemy that enters its line of sight. You’ll need to always be on high alert so that you can outflank and outsmart your enemies while making every shot count. Some of your mercs will also have close-range weapons such as, say, a huge knife. You can use these to be a bit quieter as you thin down the enemy ranks. Trophy-wise, Jagged Alliance 3 has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to try to add to your collection. The game is also Cross-Buy, so if you have a PlayStation 5, you’ll be able to download the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game, with each one having its own trophy list for you to work on. Each list has 38 Bronze trophies, 10 Silver trophies, and 2 Gold trophies. There’s a lot for you to do to get this Platinum, with some challenging objectives such as completing the game without any merc dying or being downed or completing the whole campaign without ever having more than two mercs out.

Jagged Alliance 3 is a challenging tactical RPG that will certainly please fans of the long-running franchise. It’s been over 20 years since the last main entry in the series – that would be Jagged Alliance 2 – and this sequel certainly does its name justice. There are several options for you to customize your experience so that gamers of all skill levels can have a chance of trying to save President Lafontaine. Jagged Alliance 3 is available as a Cross-Buy title, so your $59.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost.
