My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- from Idea Factory International is a new story in the long-running HameFura series. This franchise began its life online back in 2014 before being published as a light novel series. This was followed by a manga version, a spin-off manga, an anime TV series, and even an anime film. Do know that this new story is, as per the initial disclaimer, set separately from the manga, the anime, or the anime film, so the new characters you might meet are not going to be part of any of those interpretations of My Next Life as a Villainess. Got it?

With that out of the way, we’re getting a video game under the visual novel format that brings us a new tale that follows the events from one of the endings of Fortune Lover. What is Fortune Lover? Let’s talk about the main premise of this series! My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! tells the story of Catarina Claes, the only daughter of the noble Claes family from the kingdom of Sorcier. She’s a bit on the spoiled side of things and is not too happy about not getting everything to go her way. Except she’s not really Catarina.

One day, she bumps her head and starts to remember memories of a previous life. It seems she was formerly a 17-year-old otaku girl who was a big fan of Fortune Lover, an otome visual novel experience… and it’s in the world of Fortune Lover that she has reincarnated as Catarina Claes. Oh, and she’s the main villainess of the game. And no matter what she does or how she plans things, all story routes lead to Catarina’s exile… or death. That’s why the series – and, therefore, this video game – has “All Routes Lead to Doom!” right there in its name.

If you’re new to otome visual novels, they’re games in which you’ll take on the role of a female protagonist who ends up interacting with more than one potential romantic interest that will lead you down different paths that will eventually lead to one of the game’s endings. The difference for My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the specific moments that can lead to Catarina’s doom – the doom flags if you will.

For this new adventure, Catarina and her adopted brother, Keith, go onboard the massive Vinculum, a luxury liner that is set to take on its maiden voyage. She’s a bit more relaxed for this trip since she’s passed the Graduation Ceremony, which marks the end of the game’s story. She’s avoided the doom flag of characters Geordo Stuart, Keith Claes, Alan Stuart, and Nicol Ascart, managing to reach the main protagonist’s good ending while also avoiding being exiled or ending up dead in a variety of ways.

Anyway, once they’re on the ship, Catarina realizes that her friends are also there. I guess they will be going on a fun trip to relax and unwind away from school. Unfortunately, they’re then attacked by pirates who end up taking control of the Vinculum and hold everyone hostage. It’s then that things start to click for Catarina, who recalls that this particular story arc is from a Fortune Lover fanbook.

Doom flags are to be avoided at all costs, or else they will lead to Catarina’s end… again! How will your story unfold as you lead Catarina and have a direct impact on her fate? There are six romanceable characters here, including two new characters that have joined the series at the worst of times. You know, because of the pirates. Along with this new story, you’ll also be able to unlock special Memory Scenarios. They are story segments that you’ll get to experience from the point of view of other characters.

When you reach a very important decision to make between two potential paths to take, you’ll be able to review things from a different perspective by joining a special meeting… with yourself! Catarina has the possibility of attending a meeting with five different versions of herself while being led by the mighty Chairman Catarina. The Catarina Council is all inside of Catarina’s head, and it will make for some hilarious scenarios in this new adventure.
