Colorful first-person dungeon crawler Mon-Yu from Aksys Games and EXPERIENCE is ready for you on Nintendo Switch. In the land of fairies, known as Tir na Balc, the Seven Devil Kings stole all the hidden treasure inside the Dragon King’s Tower, known as Yggdran. They used their power to rule over demons, transforming the Dragon King’s Tower into a dangerous dungeon. Otherworld adventurers have been invited to explore the Dragon Tower to try and take on the Devil Kings to try and recover the stolen treasure before it’s too late, and the fairies’ land is no more.
You might have noticed from the header image and the trailer in this Mon-Yu review that the game’s title is actually a bit… longer. The game’s title sums things up nicely since it will immediately give you a good idea of what to expect from this one. This review is for Mon-Yu: Defeat Monsters And Gain Strong Weapons And Armor. You May Be Defeated, But Don’t Give Up. Become Stronger. I Believe There Will Be A Day When The Heroes Defeat The Devil King.
Mon-Yu has three different playstyles for you to choose from, which are conveniently labeled as Type A, Type B, and Type C. Think of these as sort of the difficulty settings for the journey you’re about to take on. Type A is Carefree Style. Type B is Standard Style. Type C is Challenging Style. The play style you choose will determine your level growth caps and map functions, but it will not affect how the heroes are evaluated.
For Type A, your heroes will be able to grow more powerful, and you’ll be able to use the minimap and the fill dungeon map right away. If you go for Type B, you’ll be taking on this game with what would be considered the default setting. Things are balanced differently, so your heroes won’t be able to level up as much within the dungeon, and the full map won’t be available to you until you meet specific conditions. For Type C, level growth caps will be much lower, and you’ll need to work harder to gain access to the minimap and the full dungeon map.
Once that’s been taken care of, you’ll have to register the heroes that you’ll be taking into the whole dungeon-crawling gameplay loop. Once you’ve registered enough heroes, you’ll be able to create a team. For each hero, you’ll need to assign a name a look – Human Warrior, Felis Fighter, Elf Mage, etc. The look you choose for your character will not be tied to the job you’ll select for them, but the game does suggest that you select a look that matches the class you’ll be choosing for this or that hero.
The classes you can choose from are Warrior, Fighter, Knight, Mage, Cleric, Gunslinger, Samurai, and Ninja. Each class will have different starting values for their respective class for STR, INT, MYS, VIT, AGI, and LUC for you to consider. Warriors excel at front-row combat thanks to being able to use high-powered weapons that deal massive damage. Knights excel at protecting other heroes from the vanguard thanks to their heavy armor and mighty physique. Fighters use the might of their fists, using the power of martial arts for ranged attacks.
Mages, as expected, use powerful magical spells to attack enemies, making them a unit that excels at being on the back row while supporting others. Speaking of support, you might want to have a Cleric in your group! Clerics use magic to heal the wounds of their comrades, making them a must-have for support in the worst of times. Gunslingers are characters that favor firearms to take on enemies. They might not be as strong as other heroes, but they certainly have great accuracy as they attack from a distance.
The last two classes to mention are a bit trickier to fit into your group since they require some extra planning on your end to make the most of their abilities. Samurais use deadly sword strikes to defeat enemies and are agile individuals who can use techniques such as dual-wielding. They, unfortunately, have low defense, which means that if a group of enemies targets them, they can quickly be in trouble. And then we have Ninjas. They excel at defense and evasion and have a variety of attack skills to use but are not as strong as the other heroes you can add to your party, matching the STR value for a Cleric!
Select a class, and you’ll then roll a random amount of bonus points that you can allocate to the different stats to either boost the stats favored by that class or to make up for some of its weaknesses. You could, for example, get lucky and roll 16 bonus points, which is the highest amount you can get – and for which there’s only a 1% chance! Choose a Warrior as your character’s class, and you could dump all points into STR and make it a one-hit, and you’re done type of character for your early runs. Or maybe you’d like to dump points into AGI and LUC to balance him out.
So that you can get a better idea of how things will work in your favor, allow me to discuss what each stat will do for each of your party members. STR will affect physical attacks and hit. INT will affect attack magic and MP. MYS affects recovery magic and MP. VIT affects physical defense and HP. AGI affects hit, evasion, and initiative. LUC affects many categories and could end up turning things your way during the worst of times!
While exploring the dungeon, you’ll need to watch out for skull-shaped symbols, which are enemy emblems. When you come into combat with one of them, combat will be triggered. Some of these will move, depending on an emblem’s color. An orange skull-shaped emblem will not move from its place. A green emblem will move freely around the area, so you’ll need to watch your step if you’re not ready to face the colorful enemies that will challenge you.
