OmegaBot from Red Art Games and Simon Carny is a colorful 2D action platformer set in a future where you must save humankind before it’s too late. After humans managed to use technology to live wonderful lives, progress suddenly came to an abrupt end. The world is now succumbing to an apocalyptic plague, and it’s up to OmegaBot to defeat all the enemies on its journey to defeat the fallen warriors who tried to put a stop to this but who ended up being corrupted by the plague. The mist is turning every living creature into a machine.

OmegaBot Review - 1

You’ll control the titular character with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, jumping with the X button and attacking by pressing and holding down the Square button. You’ll later unlock a double jump ability. YOmegaBot can attack at a constant and steady pace, but you need to keep an eye on its energy gauge. If you attack while jumping, OmegaBot will gain some extra height for its jump and will fall at a slower pace as long as it continues to shoot downward.

You start with a smaller section with a lightning bolt and a larger energy section. While using up the energy from the larger segment, OmegaBot’s attacks will be fully powered. Once you reach the smaller section, attacks will be smaller, but they will fire at a faster pace. Run out of energy, and you won’t be able to attack until the full energy gauge fills up on its own. OmegaBot will also move at a slower pace while recharging.

As you defeat enemies, you’ll get to collect healing orbs and gears. Healing orbs will allow you to recover some of OmegaBot’s lost health once you’ve collected enough of them to fill up the orb next to its health bar. Gears can be spent at the shop where Atlas, the last guy selling stuff on the planet, is ready to serve you. He has a flying store he will travel with so that you can always find him between each stage.

What can you buy with your hard-earned gears? You could get a health upgrade for OmegaBot so that it can sustain more damage before being defeated and sent back to the last checkpoint you managed to activate. You could also get an energy upgrade so that it can use its regular attack for longer. There are also additional costumes for OmegaBot for you to purchase, but those are traded for a different item. Each stage will have some collectibles that look like giant golden eyes, and it’s those items that you’ll be able to trade for a new look. Costumes will grant you bonuses, such as being able to deal more damage or having energy regenerate at a faster pace.

OmegaBot Review - 3

Defeat each boss that you’ll find at the end of each stage, and you’ll be rewarded with a new weapon for OmegaBot. You’ll first need to learn each boss’ movement and attack patterns to find the right window of opportunity for unleashing your attacks, so there’s going to be some trial and error to consider for this. After defeating the first boss, you’ll gain a fiery spreadshot. Defeat the second one, and you’ll get a rapidfire burst. To switch between the weapons you’ve managed to collect, all you’ll need to do is press the L2 and R2 buttons as needed.

The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy, and since this one is a Cross-Buy release, if you own a PlayStation 5 console, you’ll be able to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, with each one having a separate trophy list. Each list includes a single Bronze trophy, 4 Silver trophies, and 10 Gold trophies for you to add to your collection. Some trophies will pop as you defeat each boss and obtain abilities such as the double jump and the dash. There’s a trophy for buying a costume. A couple of trophies will unlock when you find some hidden characters. The most challenging trophies are for collecting all special items in each stage so that you can trade them for all of the available costumes.
