Visual novel Death Becomes You from Ratalaika Games and Quill Studios is a visual novel in which you must find your mentor’s murderer… with you being a suspect! You take on the role of Sidney, a student at a magical academy who, due to an unfortunate event, has grown distant from her mentor, Lyra. After sending her a message through the Mindhive – think of it as an ethereal messaging app that everyone at school uses to communicate –, she finds her seconds after she’s been murdered!
To make things worse, since Sidney is found at the scene of the crime with bloody hands, the four students that find her end up accusing her of Lyra’s murder. It’s now up to you to help Sidney find any clues she can uncover – and find any items that will lead her toward finding the real murderer – all while trying to build new relationships with the four aforementioned students so that you can try to catch them in a lie.
Are you new to visual novels? Games in this genre place a focus on their story, with some being of a bite-sized nature while others offer tomes worth of branching story paths that will take you dozens of hours to experience. They sometimes feature voice acting – which is an expensive resource – but that’s not usually the case for the smaller indie releases in the genre. That’s the case of Death Becomes You. Since it’s available at a budget price, voice acting is not expected.
Once you’ve completed the game, you should go into the Bonus section on the main menu. It’s in the Bonus section that you’ll be able to check out the art created for the game’s backgrounds and special CG scenes, as well as review the different endings that you’ve previously experienced. There’s also a Developer Notes segment that will unlock after you’ve reached a specific ending. Once unlocked, you’ll be able to get some insight into the creation of the game’s overall premise and story beats.
The game features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy, and it’s a long one! There are 10 different endings to reach, which is why the list is split into 23 Silver trophies and 4 Gold trophies. This is also a Cross-Buy release, so if you own a PlayStation 5, you’ll be able to download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and each one will have its own trophy list for you to work on. Talking about the trophies would spoil things for you, but I will mention trophies are tied to seeing all CG scenes, obtaining all items along the way, and getting all the endings.
